Bridge over Chess Games. (Story 22).

——– (Altered Mar 2 ) Story 22.

New Bridge over Chess Games 2026.

… As explorers these people have come unto wilderness land of shrubs and sticks. The leader of this expedition called William, has gathered anyone who wishes to progress a new baron wild land. The land these people traveled from is not bad but some wish a challenge in life and opening up new lands is certainly challenging. After months of study and now actually having seen this land, William spoke, ‘Greetings, Way to go people and thanks for coming.
I feel this land could be propagated to survive settlers. Who does not agree?

… There was no comment so William went on. ‘Deal of day is, If you look that way, I see lots of wild food and natural shelter in the inland caves there. For those as us, who have been educated in the wild ways, this should not be too bad. Perhaps, You others who have tagged along, will have to follow our advise but I am sure you will learn quickly. After all, Trickery, it is your life you are dealing with. I will say, anyone who has come with this group will become good explorers, ready to make do with what is at hand. Thank You all.’
… William looked about and said, ‘Fancy that, With all this shoreline of thick shrubbery, it could add up to miles of worthless land to the unobservant and inexperienced persons, but we here are willing to make a go, you bet. I was told, the ones who inhabit this area, the land will belong to their King. So to prosper this land for our leader and King in his own right, this would become a large feather in our groups cap, for sure.
… Our King who rules over the large city and homeland in that distant Valley, I am sure, knows the area He sent us to.’ William went on with, ‘The plus of that is, King Damian told me that this area we go to, is being developed by others, but King Damian would like to expand his kingdom into areas further along this continent. Our King has sent us scouts to make a start and to send progress reports back. May heaven help us, for this will show King Damian our worth, as we can be sent to cement a land deal with others.’

Chapter One

Setting up.
… Now in this story we have the leader, William who is the King’s favorite, for William is smart and has his head on his shoulders. He is a true explorer and has taken many studies. He has brought his circle of friends and told them, ‘Yes, it will be difficult for sure, for this land holds many crocodiles and water snakes. But we have smaller rodents as rabbit, for the eating and many fish in the sea.’ He added, ‘We need a boat.’ But as looking about, there are no trees in area. William pointed out to his friend Jeff, ‘Perhaps I am too optimistic, but this is a fantastic opportunity to start an area for our King back home. I know he is a good king. He cares for his people as he can.’
… William went on with, ‘Struth, I have seen others, slave their people and hang them as examples of what could happen to them. Very uncouth to me. I expect my men to have respect for all creatures. Any disagree?’ All were silently watching him. William went on with, ‘OK, Sorry for the lectures but all should be on same page.’ Then, William raised his cup and all cheered and drank the small amount of beer they had in their given cups. Was this a toast to the beginning?
… William went on with, ‘At this point as coming here from abroad, I see it is the waters that rule this swampy land. Even the land that may look well for a dwelling like over there, trickery, winter storms will soon rid of your small castle in these sometimes untamable areas. You who are here have been hand picked and we will find a way around all difficult endeavors.’
… Thus with the dismissal of the general group to wander as will, William gathered a few key people, who have more understanding and willingness to make a go here. They gathered and sat as a group.
William said, ‘First deal of day is shelters.’ Within this small group were 5 men of construction. William and they chatted within the tall inland grasses near, they all observed this land. As William pointed inland he commented, ‘Perhaps we have much soil in the inner masses of this area. To bring life out into swampy areas we need concrete for stilts of some type. We have to have some sturdy trees, but there seems to be very few here. Concrete will be good to set logs within swampy areas. But gentlemen, work as you can and always leave some coastal areas free as wilderness. As we all know, keeping a balance within an area will still thrive the area, from the tiny bacteria to the big snakes and crocodiles playing within the tides of our swampland.’

… William then appointed two fellows to stay inland where there is proper soil. William specified, ‘May heaven help us, Please Collect all wild foods and replant in a garden type setting. This will be our chief food area.’ William called to main gardener Grant, ‘Please work in a hasty manner for food is number one priority while next will be shelter. We may have to sleep in damp grass for first few days but we have proper gear for this scenario.’ He turned and said to the general persons, ‘Thank you people, for all bringing a hammock. We will all owned this land piece by piece, but first do you have questions?’
… George spoke up saying, ‘How do you know crocodiles will stay near water. William looked at George for a minute. Then smiled and went on saying, ‘Well most of a crocodiles life they are raising little ones. This takes the shallow waters so prevalent in this area. Thus in winter the crocks could and may come up into our land, but we can deal with that as time comes. Maybe make strong fencing of some type. We have to make do with what is here right now. But concrete is our savior for now and in future.’
… William went on with, ‘Greetings Teddy, Please lead a couple of people to set up spars inland here, for the making of concrete. we will make much of this. Use the existing bush twig masses, to hold concrete together. Have others harvest the sticks further inland to be placed in swampy areas there by shore. Then this will make more garden area further inland. Please carry on fellows, we have much to do, even to get a foot print in this area.’
… As William looked about with his right hand near, he called the fellows again saying, ‘Deal of day is, This area here has a river tributary, We will leave this area for the crocs and other wild life. But fellows, There may be many fish come down this river in spawning times, a good bonanza for us if we partake at right times.’
… Just then George hollered, Holy Mackerel, look there is a big one. Teddy started running saying, Quick give me that rod of yours. George asked, which one. Teddy said, ‘Hells Bells Quick here, I will send fish to you.’ The two danced in the shallow waters edging the fish toward the group. It was Jeffery who had a garden claw. He was able to stab the fish and hold it down. Teddy came quickly in to help and they had dinner caught as William cheered. ‘Good fellows! Here is a pail to put it in.’ all settled down as William continued with, ‘All we can do is wait for these events that occur in nature naturally. Then if we balance out our greediness and allow nature to continue its cycles among us, we will harvest goodly amounts of fish each fall for our winter eats.’ William smiled saying ‘Very good fellows. Know your surroundings, do not destroy them.’

Septic Tank
… William called Jeffery, ‘Please Jeff, get Tony to help you go inland and set up a bathroom area. It takes solid soil to filter out raw materials so to break down into natural usage. Thus the shore will benefit from our waists. A deep septic container with piping of spiderweb construction, so irrigation area will allow the produce to dissipate its foul smells and benefit all around. Use sticks and twigs to loosely burry the wood. Then the refuse and water will have small channels to travel as it decays into food for insects and plants. You remember how I showed you?’ ‘Yes for sure,’ spoke Jeff. ‘thanks.’

… As the days went on William was pleased. All were toeing their line and many areas were being set up as gardens. With the soil clearing, others dug out roots and prepared for wild harvests of edible plants. Grant, the one with book in hand, was checking all plants coming into garden area. No wandering or poison weeds and the likes, would ever be allowed into their secret garden patch. They also brought into area, more insect deterring plants.
… Like the cycle of Radish which grows first thing in spring. Thus slugs love radish. When young have eaten the radish, being only plant in their area, they have the habit of eating this particular plant. Thus they wish this plant all their lives. So the more valuable plants of our group, will be saved by the radish. But ultimately, also by the slug’s habit to follow routine. So keep the radishes growing strong and healthy. also there are Marigolds. They give off good smells that also detour some insects, and the flowers of these plants are pleasing to the eye as well. Another true winner in gardeners eyes.
… With plantain of 2 types, dandelions of several types and chickweed growing up over bushes, harvests of these plants were made easy as well. You could have a whole big bowl full of chickweed and be nourished with all the vitamins within, but it is not much of a filler. You need to add some root vegetables as in carrots and potatoes, which also grow nicely in this area.
… Our people went through trial and error, especially at start. With the getting soils of right ratio and Ph., these plants will grow well for our people. A variety of wilderness plants along with some domesticated plants normally consumed when in cities, are good for moral. All got their chance to experiment and some got rewards for finding better ways of growing foods. Thus eating area often moved about to be near the foods of the times. Then after a time of progress, our people were not so much afraid of food shortages. Well done.
… As the first phase went on, each person collected what would make their sleeps more comfortable including weaving the tall thick grasses into a type of mattress. Life was growing more comfortable day by day and after a few weeks they did not need to go search for their breakfast. It was at hand by the more energetic ones who harvested a bit each evening, for the early breakfasts, had by all. (An incentive to get up early.)

A Quiet Breakfast Gone Bad.
… As our people awoke in morning, this group collected breakfast and took it outside their hut. It was a beautiful day and the sun was warm. It is far less crowded being out at the picnic tables built recently for just such an occasion. Our group consists of leads William with friend jeff and the other workers appointed in different places. There are also a few children who came with their mom or dad. Some have become friends so it is a happy family group all together. This makes up about 10 people in our group.
… There was also 2 who came to keep track of what all happened in area. They were often taking pictures to send back to other groups, advertising the possibility of more ventures. Thus one of this group was usually present with camera, and was fortunate enough to be able to followed the young lady named Mary. If not this incident would not have been made public. An eye in the sky as it were. So they caught Mary on her journey.
… Mary explained, ‘I had not been well lately but the cast on my arm was taken off yesterday. Today early, family was going to have breakfast out by the river. A beautiful morning for thus, with pale sunlight among misty cloud wisps and the birds singing their hearts out. It was still spring time but the warming sun was catching us and almost lifting us off into our day. That was the feeling I had. But I had no idea, that that feeling was about to become very much a reality.’
… Mary went on with, ‘As we settled among all the food before us and admired the nature about us, I heard a rumbling in the distance. Unsure of what it was I continued telling of a dream I had. There was a giggle here and a smile there, but suddenly a sound came, unfamiliar to us all. As some were taking their portion of food, I looked upstream and saw trees being shaken along shoreline but before I could do or say another word, here comes a wall of water as all screeched and squealed in hoarer. The wave rushed up onto shore as our belongings were swept into the waters and we felt the G force of our life being washed away.
… As the uninvited river came, my family was all around, but soon we went out in different directions, in the chairs each of our family chose to eat in. I turned in the direction we were heading, my hands clung to a cold surface. It was the pink flamingo inflatable I was on, and it was bouncing about as the river wave corrected itself to hold my family. Thought was, it is nice to have family all around, but that thought changed drastically, as some got tangled in shore brush and others grabbed floating branches and held on for dear life. Now, there were three of family about us. But wait! Here comes another, dip and wave in the flowing waters.
… Well that time we were flung apart with one going very fast and another going to opposite side of river. What happened was, the wave just gone through was from bank of river. River had flown the banks and formed another arm of the river. My brother Tommy was swiftly traveling further away from me, upon a different river. I shouted but the water was roaring about. It was difficult to communicate anyway, for at this point the nerves and senses were as scattered as the river was. We were not in our control, it was the river who was boss now.’

Mary Went on With,
… ‘As life settled a bit I noted a chair floating near shore. I wondered why it was not flowing with the river. As I floated nearer I realized it was the chair I sat in, where I had to strap my arm up so to stop the pain. This strap had tangled among the branches of this fallen tree near shoreline. I was kind of glad I was not in that chair, for the area was very swampy on shore. But then I was relieved, thinking of the weeks I sat and lay back within that chair. It was a multiple fracture and very painful at times.
… As I went on and my mind was relieved of last thoughts. I could hear this crow cawing and uttering guttural sounds. I could see this tree top planted in the river but this tree top seemed very short for a full grown tree. Upon coming closer there was a nest in this tree top and the chicks were begging for food. The parent crow was beside itself for could not feed the crying chicks. The tree top obviously newly planted by the flood, kept waving back and forth in the ebb and tide of the fast flowing river. The adult crow was on this large twig which was stationary on the shore. (An older bush which had obviously lost many branches of smaller girth.) The crow was very angry that it could not feed its hungry chicks. Poor thing. But I and my home of now, floated on by, leaving this dilemma to be solved by the receding river waters.
… As my mind changed again I saw a floating bike, almost in upright position as it sauntered by.
‘How in the world, I wondered.
Bikes sink fast, the last time I remember.’

… But as this bike came nearer, I hoped that it would not pop the pink flamingo I was on. I grabbed flamingo harder as we floated on by. Then I saw the bike had a floaty also, which was holding it upright. As I floated by that dilemma, I shortly came upon a picnic table full of dishes and food. I had been floating for at least an hour and was hungry, for I was not able to get food of breakfast before the river wall came and took family away.
… At this point I was slowing down and the river had become wider. With this I was able to steer my flamingo toward the shore more, where the picnic table was nestled. I edged flamingo against table and bushes of shore and there was our family table with some of Aunt Clair’s precious bone China. As I was reaching and snaffling foods of bacon, eggs, toast and the whole jar of jam, I heard a voice above the rumbling waters about me.
… As I gazed toward shore, I noted the lawn, although flattened and washed with muddy waters, was short and taut against the ground. Signs of a well managed yard. I looked beyond that to see a lady kneeling down asking, ‘Can I help you? Here try reach my hand here.’ As I did flamingo wavered and I pulled away again. In my mind, it was a case of staying nestled within bush so to partake of this good food. This would stop the belly from aching. Or in another part of mind, it was to get out of this jailing river so to be free and look for family. My mind was boggled for a minute.
… The lady was kind and had a nice smile. This caught my attention more than the food, and I found myself reaching as far and hard as I could. As I stretched toward the lady’s hand and strong arm within the dainty silky, blouse sleeves about face and knee, I had turned away so to reach arm further, then I felt her hand grasp me about wrist. But suddenly another larger hand grabbed me about elbow and I knew in an instant, I had been rescued from my floating bird. My thoughts went instantly to mother telling her, ‘I was OK and had a fun ride.’ But as feet jumped to solid ground, I realized that was a far off dream at this point. ‘But a big smile came to my face as I realized, I was now on Solid ground!.’

Mary continued with,
… ‘The lady and gentlemen asked me to stay with them a bit to help rescue others. As I heard this I looked into my other hand and found I had grabbed several slices of toast from picnic table, so I smiled at the two, indicating I would stay and help, as I went down on butt and shoved bread into mouth. As I relaxed and was hurrying to swallow what I could, I saw the man that helped me out of my dilemma. He had gone to home in distance and was coming back with a small ladder and a fishing line. I thought this odd. Were we fishing people out of the river? My mind suddenly thought of dead people. Oh hope not, but then the man came nearer me and he opened his tackle box. ‘Oh’, I uttered aloud. ‘you are going to get fish for the ones we save.’ Well the guy smiled as looking my way. I was relieved and said, ‘Here is a plastic container to put some smaller fish into as you catch them.’ He answered ‘Oh that is great, thanks.’

The Rescue and New Homes,
… It only took a few days to find everyone. Some As Ted had gone far away but this became a plus in time. We ventured further abroad upon this watery shoreline and found there was higher ground a distance away. It would be much better for home building in an area found up and away from waters. With most of our group on this trip to find Ted, this find and knowledge made us in a happier frame of mind as we went back to shore. When we got back to shore, we packed up what we could and made that trip much more willingly’

… There were many caves in the hills, although one did include a bear. But even with this, we felt much better, for the alligators would not be found here. There had been a couple shelters built among the sticks and twigs of shoreline within that swamp, but William agreed, ‘Struth, Leave those huts to be used in autumn months when many would be fishing for our winter food supplies.’
… Later as all were accounted for, most followed into the Dargan’s land. There we were offered a warm drink of coffee and treats. Many had settling about the grass and wooden chairs near front of Dargan’s nice home. One asked the lady Tansey Dargan if this land they came upon with the caves, ‘Is it yours or would we be encroaching on your property?’ Bronze answered, ‘Well no, that is, I do not think so. This land is open and we came a couple years ago. If it is owned, my wife and I do not recollect that at all. Cracker Jack, Open land we were told by our director.’
… William asked, ‘What was your agenda for this Land?’ Tansey said, ‘We did not have one. We asked this person if it be Ok to stay and use that land for a while. He agreed and implied that he had stayed there for a while himself.’ William commented, ‘Fancy that, we were told a few months back that others owned inland and we were sent to uphold the shoreline. We attempted and were getting a good start but the river had other plan as you know. Ha-ha.’
… Bronze smiled and said, ‘A True Bet, River is prone to temper in spring times, but that one was outstanding. We have never seen it flow its banks. It usually just cleans up the shoreline of old leaves and twigs.
… As you see, we have our house built quite far from river just for this reason. We also keep poultry cages and food storage up near the home, so to preserve for a future date. True Bet, We spent too long and much hard work, to get this beautiful home up for our living.’ Several of our group agreed, ‘Yes, it is beautiful.’
… Jeffery asked, ‘Pardon, what was the name of the one that directed you here. Tansey answered, ‘Johan was his name.’ William replied, ‘OK, perhaps not the same person. Jeff, we will have to get ahold of our owner and leader. Then we will make sure not to trod on others land.’ William turned to Bronze and asked, ‘May heaven help us all. We will ask about your land as well. Our lead seemed to have info of others in area.’ ‘OK’ uttered Bronze. ‘We have tried getting ahold of our director but not able to. Good luck.’

… After a little chat and some warm coffee, our rescuers the Dargan’s, said their byes as our group went back to the cave area. Most agreed, it was much better and there was no concerns of the river taking us for a ride again. But we did come upon that bear again. But Mom ran off with the two cubs as we hollered and beat the two pots we had for the campfire. As they were running we were relieved. Now the campfire had a good home, where the river will not come.
… We spend most of the day packing old camp up and transporting to new camp. We were all pretty tired by the time that sun went down to sleep. We gratefully dug out our blankets and rolled up into them, to have a chilly but good sleep. … Well, early in morning we were awoken by a rather large alarm clock. It is not the type of alarm many would wake up too. It was more a jump up and a wetting of one’s bed. Especially when the face of this alarm clock was glaring at us as it huffed and puffed about.
… After a very long 2 minutes, it wandered off again. This made our agenda for that day, for sure. Cut down some trees and make a thick fence with that concrete, to protect all caves that were being used. We had to proclaim our dwellings, for tomorrow we may be forfeited in more ways than one.

Making our niche through Paving.
… As time went on our group wandered a wider area. In the next few weeks we used concrete and were able to set up sleeping areas and meeting areas within the few caves near. Others were caring for our raised poultry cage and the garden patches were getting a watering system which was starting to take shape. With some larger trees in the distance, a cart was constructed to carry water to near planting areas.
… On one early morn, Tony wandered and found a group of people near. It was a small settlement with about 10 persons but they had extras. So Tony was able to buy 2 donkeys for a needed pulling of cart. Tony found through conversation, that this land near caves, that our group had settled upon, was not original land, it belonged to others. Our group found other areas near with settlements that were open minded. So our group could just fit into the puzzle nicely and had helpers from other groups to start our journey. We Paid them back by making concrete for them to use on their land, so all was well with area. We were getting low on materials but could find more if needed. We had the basics already made.

Tony and Tommy’s Trip.
… With this move inland settled up nicely, Tommy and Tony were asked by William to wander further up our river. Scout about to view the terrain for prospects. But after an hour or 2 in that bushland, they were met by several guys with guns. When the men met, all froze. Tony and Tommy were very demure When they saw the others had 3 guns in their possession. The group said abruptly, ‘This is not your land. You are trespassing upon this our land. Please leave instantly. You must be the river people. Stay by the river or there will be troubles.’
… Well that sent Tony and Tommy scurrying through bushes again toward the river. After a while and all out of breath, Jeff was the one they met, so it was Jeff who got all the frightening gossip. After Jeff consoled our two travelers, he knew what he had to do. He went straight to his higher person, William and they discussed the many incidences the people in our area were being threatened by. Oh yes, this was not the only time they came upon a brick wall. Jeff and William discussed and were told by other groups, Yes there were others out there but it should not be a problem. But with all the threats and the negative side of life coming about, William and Jeff were coming up with plans. They would get nowhere, if their group became afraid to travel.

Chapter two

—-

… William got busy and constructed a letter before sleep one night. It was to their lead and King of another city. William had heard through the Dargan’s, that this was second year, a wave had come down this river and destroyed much upon these lands. In the next day or two, William had invited Jeffery over to help with this letter. Will thought, maybe Jeff had other perspectives upon situation, but William also wanted someone else’s writing skill so to make the right impression on their King back home.
… Jeff had talked to others further along this coastal line who also agreed, as Dargan’s had, that this was second year this wave had transpired. Very unsettling to many. William had figured, that they could not and will not put in much work to have it all float down river in spring time. William also reported upon their few weeks stay so far. He told of others inland allowing them to stay among the hills where many caves resided. He also told of the alarming threats other strangers were giving many in area. William assured their King, that the group was going to continue with their garden and poultry areas inland, which was constructed and growing well. We will stay among the caved areas for shelter.’
… William went on writing to King, ‘Others in area are helping us, since our land near shore was totally destroyed with the big wave. Then William signed letter as, Sir William your lead in wilderness, ‘If you object let us know.’ But we are finding it difficult to continue along shoreline with these waves threatening to destroy what we have accomplished. I await your direction.

… As the next week or two went on our people were hearing stories of the floods and how, many people being drowned by the wave they experienced earlier. William and Jeffery were in concern. Would these waves get bigger? They knew wave was coming from upstream but why. Were the mountains having avalanches. were there great storms in this mountains. They discussed many reasons of why, but as leaders of many people they felt a responsibility to protect the few near them. This may include the many people in area as well. With all the stories heard by our expedition group, situation started looking as a life and death scenario.
… Jeffery came over in next week, just to bring produce and water to their leader William. The two struck up conversation and Jeffery felt he would like to take a trip upstream to see what was happening. He saw that William was uncertain. Jeff stated, ‘For Sure, I would not make waves, I will just observe what I see. I will report back to you sir.’ William agreed. ‘Yes may heaven help us. You travel for 3 hours, then no matter what you find, start back so you get here safely.’ William put his hand on Jeff’s shoulder as saying, ‘I need you about to help me here. If it be something serious, we cannot do much ourselves. I am sure it will be big businesses that own outright this land. So Yes, go for a 2 hour walk but watchout for a crook.’ ‘Yes Sir. I will come straight home to your place for dinner. But also, I will take a writing pad so you get all info. I will bring back all I jot down. For Sure’ ‘Fancy that’ agreed William. ‘When?
… Jeff was startled at that reply. He answered, ‘Easy sir, I will go tomorrow Sir. I feel it is to be a sunny day all day, for there is little draft or down wind today. So this nice weather should stay another day or 2. I will start early tomorrow, after a good breakfast.’ ‘OK then, I will see you off. thanks.’
… Gossip travels fast and thus the next day, many had gathered to see Jeff off. Most were thankful that their leads were taking action. They brought goodwill tithings and Jeffery ended up with a picnic basket full of eats. Jeff had stated that he did not wish others to come, for If guards remember a face or a piece of clothing, the guards may take hostages.
… Jeff felt he would take choice foods but he wished to travel lightly, so a backpack was in order. Outside of a clean pair of socks and shoes, he would fill up backpack with what food he could, for that days travel. Where as he had to leave almost half the food brought, others were gathering in courtyard upon the logs in front of the caves, and were partaking in a bit of food as they saw Jeffery off on his trip. But, many stayed for a few hours waiting for what they hoped to be good news. So as the day went on, others got cooking and all kept a smorgasbord filled for the many whom stayed in area.
… This was of benefit, for many plans were revealed between neighbors and all became enthused for more building to modernize of their area. Like shops for those whom could sew and markets for those whom had extras each year. All would get a small pay for articles that may be very needed by others. This was great to all, for otherwise it was a days travel to next more modern city, where prices were very high and strangers will rob you.

Jeffery’s Dilemma Upstream.
… Jeff made a gallant trip at start, although it was later in day than he envisioned. As he set off, he wished to partake in some food items, of his favorite dishes but he preservered further in time and ground. It was nice land with many trees providing much shelter from that blazing sun. And he found that the river seemed to be leading him along the way. Although it disappeared at times, he tended to wish its direction, for he was very far away from camp now and knew he would be lost for sure. Instinctively or not he felt he should stay near river for the waters would surely, lead him back to camp.
… Near river it was a dryer land with spars grass and hot sun. But often he saw small critters burrowing or hiding from his approach. He did come upon a couple of bears but they were well fed, for upon seeing him they snuck away into tree or bush. This was just fine for Jeffery. Last thing he wished was to be treed for who knows how long, as waiting for a bear to get tired of guarding him. They can be bad news, especially the older ones.
… All this good travel took time and that is one thing Jeff was not aware of.
He actually got lost in thought. He did not feel hungry so when he saw light dimming he felt he should get back into the sunlight. What he did not know, was the light dimmed because the sun was going down. He had gone into many bushes of higher stature and struggled to get to an area that was more open.
… As soon as he saw the sun in fact was setting, his belly started grumbling and boy was he hungry. He found a rather large gray boulder and rushed to settle there. All was quiet and peaceful but for his stomach. He rushed to open his backpack and get out a larger plastic container. Open the lid and a warm waffling air of great smelling stuff came out. It was the teriyaki chicken he came upon first. Forget the utensils, down the hatch went a wing. .. ‘Hang on, there are bones somewhere here. Ha Ha.’
… As he downed a few legs and more wings, his belly problem vanished but now he had other concerns. In the distance he could hear thumping and other noises, not of natural decent. Well, he did not think so, but was in question still. He got into a sweeter container and was getting to a point where the sounds were becoming more important. Thus Jeff wrapped things up and got all packed away again upon his back, then he slowly carried on, snooped through bush and tree.
… He knew river was right near, for the sound it made, as roaring over a few larger rocks along the way. This comforted him as he was trying to sneak along toward the strange noise. He wondered if it could be elk or deer charging each other. He did not know exactly for only saw this on TV and the likes. He knows that humans often put false sounds over electrical devises. A good way to tantalize human hearing to coax them into buying who knows what. But there became a problem.
… That dusky vision was becoming darker and Jeffery was finding himself grasping at bush and lower tree branches even to get ahead. Suddenly shelter was becoming the key. Before Jeff went on he stopped and thought, Where would be a dry shelter. He was tiring and grasping for straws but as blind as a bat without radar.
… Oh No, down he went into what felt like a far drop. Where was he? As he sat where he landed, the sounds were louder but his heart stopped going so fast. He realized, that was not the sounds of nature. It was hammering heard and it was human made. Jeff thought, Could I holler loud enough for the others to hear me? Is this a Bear trap. Oh Gosh, what do I do. He panicked and stood up. but should he run or even walk. He thought, I may be on the edge. I must stay still, I do not wish to fall again.
… So here he was standing still till his legs were aching. He is not one who hikes and today he had hiked long hours. He thought, If only I had known to stop walking. I have to sit. He felt the wall at his back so he put butt on ground and as stretching out his legs he did not feel a cliff, so he settled as he felt safer. Eventually he did relaxed enough to have a short sleep.
… Later, he was woken by a loud buzzer and shortly after that all became silent. Jeffery thought in his sleepy awaken state, maybe that was a buzzer for the men to go home. Maybe they will be back and I will holler to them as soon as someone comes near. I must stay awake now, I had some sleep. Well time passed and naturally, he fell asleep again. He was tired from the eventful day.

Voice of Authority.
… The next thing he knew, he woke up to one talking. ‘What are you doing here in this hole Sir. Are you insane? You could have died stumbling about in this open pit. Speak up Sir!’ ‘Oh, I was wandering and it got dark out. I was trying to find a place of shelter for the night.’ Guy Hollard, ‘There is no shelter here sir. I would suggest you go that way and do not return or we will have to shoot you for trespassing.’ ‘OK OK, I meant no harm. Please help me out? OK Sir. The guy turned and hollered, ‘Josh, come help me here.’ As the second guy came Jeff was saying, ‘I was told to scout river for we were almost drowned when this river flooded.’ The two men up top gave Jeff their arms and Jeff with a struggle was able to climb out of pit.
… Jeff asked, ‘Was it you people who made the river wave. I see you are building a big bridge. Will a wave happen again? We wish to know so we will stay away from river to save our lives.’ The Guard replied, ‘Where do you live Sir. This area is supposed to be uninhabited? Where is your settlement from here?’ ‘Oh I am sorry. I did not know this land was owned. I was ordered by my boss to scout the river for the reason why such a large wave come at us a few weeks back. I have traveled almost (2 days) to get here. I was going to return later today if found nothing. But now I see it was probably you people who disturbed the rivers flow. Sorry, I will go back now. Thanks.’
… Guard replied, ‘OK Sir but do not return to this area.’ Guard turned to the other saying, ‘Here Josh,’ as guard took basket From Josh. ‘This has been made as a fair well gift for you. Take this box and walk at least an hour, then you can look within. Tell your leader we own this land and are settling it. There will be guards posted in area so take heed.’ ‘Oh Yes, answered Jeff, ‘and thank you for the gift. Bye bye’ and Jeff turned and quickly walked away hoping guards would not retaliate with a shot or two.
… He walked for half an hour But no, nothing happened. Then gingerly, he decided to glance back and sure enough, there in the distance was a guard with a gun posted on a high rock that they had dug out of area. Well Jeff turned again and quickly kept walking.

Back at home.
… In time, others stepped up to help William with progressing in their land. They have some harvest happening and many pitched in. Main gardener Grant instructed, ‘Only pick enough for 2 days, or food will not keep. Lets take these that are in the sun. Those there will keep longer in shade.’
… William heard main gardener organizing the people and was pleased. But then he lifted his head to feel the nice cool breeze on this rather warm day and low and behold here comes Jeff from a distance. As seeing this Willian called to Grant saying, ‘I will be in meeting with Jeff for a while. Please finish up here and get food into cellar.’ William smiled and said, ‘Thank you people and carry on. We will eat well this winter.’
… Jeff approached smiling as William ushered him into a good sized tent which is shelter for better days. On way in William smiled and asked, ‘Trickery! So what happened to you?’ Jeff put his head down as he sided up with a chair. ‘Well sir, I walked too long but knew I would not make it home before dark. The darkness came suddenly for I went into some woods. But sir we may have a problem. I stumbled into a pit. William uttered, Oh, Struth.
… Jeff looked at William and smiled saying, It was not too deep, but it was on edge of mountainous area. I was lucky that time sir.’ ‘May heaven help us, spoke William, I had a feeling you should have taken a buddy. Wilderness is not a safe place to tromp in, especially when alone.’ ‘Yes interrupted Jeffery, But that is not the important news here.’ ‘Oh,’ stared William as he settled in his wooden chair with a small glass of water. ‘So what is the news, I hope good news Sir…’ Jeff looked stern at William as William uttered, ‘Struth, maybe I do not wish to here this just now. We need to get some lunch.’
… As William craned his head looking at what food was about, he asked, Are you hungry?’ ‘Actually No Sir. I ate my food yesterday, and on way home I ate the food offered me. With that food they stipulated not to eat it till after i got out of sight of the guard with a gun…’ ‘A gun’ stated William. ‘Yes sir, the bad news is, I was chased out of area by several men with guns. Whatever they are building, which was more than a bridge, They were guarding it as if it was gold. Sir, I think you should report this to our King.’
… William said, ‘Well hold on there, we are not the only ones with land in this area. We have heard of at least two other groups being there.’ Jeffery looked at William quietly. He said, ‘Come out side, i will start a fire and we should cook some meat for dinner, maybe even lunch.’ So they smiled and got up to go to counter. ‘Here are some veggies but meat will be in ice box there.’ ‘Yes’ said Jeff as he went to ice box. ‘I think we need to be careful what we do here. Those people were very rude to me. They told me to get out and do not come back. The one guy I guess leader also added, or there will be consequences. I was in a bit of a panic Sir. I felt threatened and in fact, I thought we should pack up here and leave. They may come after us if we are in their way.’
… William said quietly, ‘I wonder if that is what happened to Tanya and Branson’s leader. Remember, they told us they had not heard from lead and it had been several months.’ The two men pondered a bit then William said, ‘But we will not know that for their leader walked from them to never return.’ As William went out and made a fire from small logs Jeff brought the rabbit out from freezer. William said, ‘Way to go, here put it in the pot here. thanks.’ Then as William was setting up rod to swing pot over camp fire, he asked jeff, “You were saying something of other stuff rather that a bridge. Hey said jeff. William carried on with, ‘Struth, What else were these people building that you saw?
… Jeff sat by fire but as smoke came in his direction. he moved quickly to another corner saying, ‘Well there were, what looked like homes bult near. It may have been their homes they stayed in as building, but it seemed to be permanent. I Wonder what they do to control the bears there?’ William uttered … ‘More Bears?’ ‘Yes’ answered Jeff as he settled again.
… Jeff went on with, ‘I ran into a mother bear with her cubs, at least twice, as I traveled to that bridge.’ William replied, ‘Use pots and pans. Bears can be scared off with noise. Some say to lie down and play dead. That for me, would be giving up.’ William looked at jeff and said, ‘May heaven help us, use noise tactic before you surrender to any bear.’
… Then William smiled and continued with, ‘Maybe use that if humans give you a bad time too. If the noise is bad enough and the humans do not see what it is, a lot will go take a hike. Hahaha.’ With that both men smiled at each as Jeff said, ‘Yes that may have worked for a bit. Haha.’
… William turned over the rabbit in the big pot that was boiling with the fire. William continued, ‘Perhaps I will send a letter back home. King Damian should know what is happening here.’ ‘Yes’ agreed Jeff. Then some ruckus happened and our two looked up from fire, to see several others coming for eats. Rabbit was smelling good and was a bell for dinner. But as all approached, here coming from another direction, is Tanya and Bronze with a small pig fully cooked. Well William and Jeff were all smiles. ‘Greetings’ said William, ‘Here sit here and we will serve You. So as more gathered about that fire, Bronze uttered, Thank you very much. We will not go hungry in our first few weeks here.’
… Well they all had a wonderful dinner and many conversations were had. They were all geared up to either travel back home or write back a letter telling of all that is transpiring. They were not sure which was best but figured time would tell. Besides, right now after that big meal, they were stuffed and needing to retire.

Guard Intrusion.
… As they were settling and about to go to nightly destinations, they heard a rustling. Jeff jumped up in alarm. ‘Is it a bear?’ William beside him said, ‘sh….’ It sounded as something was sneaking up on them behind the wind wall, they had constructed a few weeks back. They stayed quiet for a minute but reached for their guns who had them. William whispered to Tom, ‘Please go peek through the crack in wall on far corner.’ Tom got up quietly and went over. As he peered out he said, ‘All in red uniforms.’ William thought, guards? by whom? Jeff asked, ‘Tanya, what color were your leaders guards wearing.’ Tanya said, ‘I did not see guards. If so it was two with leader Johan who all wore normal clothing.’
… Suddenly, all shut up as a distant voice said, ‘You in that shelter there. Come out and show yourselves.’ William whispered quietly to the rest, ‘Heaven help us, Stay where you are, all of you. I will go.’ He quietly got up and went around wall to get to make do walk. As soon as William saw armed guards he asked, ‘Whom do you work for.’ Inside shelter Jeff whispered to the others, ‘It is not people from bridge area, they have grey uniforms.’ Since nobody knew exactly what Jeff was talking of, most just smiled or nodded. Our people were nervous for could hear the others talking but did not hear what was said.
… Then Tom said, from his lookout post in corner, ‘They brought a horse to William and are asking him to ride into town with them.’ Jeff in alarm jumped up and hollered, ‘Do not take our people’ Others in shelter tried to stop him but he was in alarm and was not listening. Jeff continued out the shelter and ran around corner to see William saying, ‘It is all right Jeff. I am going back to a meeting with our King. These are his guards. He has heard from others of problems in area and they have come to see if anything can be done.’
… Jeff stopped running by then and said in exasperation, ‘What are we to do while you are gone?’ William said, ‘ Men, These 8 guards will be staying here so please make more shelters. I will be back with new guards. We are going ahead with our endeavors. The people building that bridge are intruders. The law has been on their case for a while. Relax and settle in.
… William continued with, ‘Only thing is, before I return I will expect another building or two finished for winter months, For the new people coming in to help us out.’ smiled William and tipped his head as the horses changed direction.
… So as William and two guards wandered off with horses, our people all came around that wall of comfort to see William disappear on the horizon. As all became aware of the many red uniforms about, some of the guards were preparing to do some proper building. They had brought with them hunting equipment and brass door hinges and the likes. There was even mettle walling for making outhouse stalls for the group. Thus all got busy and some super digging was going to happen.
… The main guard spoke up and said, ‘We are to help set you up for winter and stabilize this land to be a permanent living area. The bridge people should dare not to come here.’ There were a few cheers and all were milling about finding something to sleep on as others were getting orders from guards of what they will do in the next days. What a happy time. Tanya and Bronze will be surprised. They had already left before the guards came, but they are sure to see them in near future.

Guards in Red.
… As our group was doing great work in several areas Tanya and Bronze had written to their lead as they had many times, without a response. But in the next day or two they were totally surprised to get a letter and pictures of guards in red uniforms. Johan, the leader of Tanya and Bronze wrote of having given up, for he was chased out of area by guards in grey. He managed to get out with them shooting at him and has been nervous to even go back. He apologized and was very happy to hear that Tanya and Bronze were still alive. He went on in length of the guards helping others there, closer near the waters edge and to be aware of them and help when can. They have teamed up with me so are aloud to use more of the inland. Please help them out. Thank you. I am also sorry to say, I cannot come there. I am busy here at home too. I became a father a week ago so life is rather hectic. Then Johan wrapped up letter by saying, ‘Please feel free to live your life with those others. Your land is safe with them. thank you.’
… Now Tanya and Bronze did not know if that meant Johan was retiring from situation or not. But Bronze and Tanya were certainly going to help when they could. First, out of curiosity for sure. Outcome would ensure their land they are living on was theirs. Tanya said, ‘We must go there without getting shot, Oz dear.’ ‘Oh Yes, haha. We will go slowly and to where we know William was staying dear. Shall we go tomorrow. asked Bronze. ‘Not sure’ replied Tanya. ‘Maybe wait a few days. I think letter is saying the guards just got there. Bronze replied, ‘Yes, Let things settle and we will take them over another pig or two. We will have a party for all. It will be the start of our country.’ exclaimed Bronze. Haha. They were both very happy and went about home and yard fixing things up, preparing for the last round of crops for this year. They had abundance of crops and life was good.

Chapter Three.

New groups of Guards.
… In Bridge area, they were making much headway with acquiring land. There have been many persons helping in this secret building area and heads of group sent note home, that there needed to be more guards and workers. Menial jobs so could employ the average Joe, said the note. So in time there were a few new guards acquired this past week for secretive bridge area.
… These guards were not for fighting for most were the average joe off the street. So until they get fighting experience, boss sent them out to scout the land near bridge. Boss gave orders to scout for marks in the land, as great valleys or sheer rocky cliffs and mark them on this map. Boss explained, ‘This is in general area where our bridge is, see. You 4 new recruits will go out, one going north south east or west. Pick among yourselves where you wish to go. Here are 4 compasses, do not lose them.’ As you go I want you to just mark things down of what you see. But if any of you come upon people, do not talk to them. just sneak about and get away. But also, mark where you see these people. You see, this our bridge is somewhat of a secret and invasions will only hamper our project.’
… Boss continued with, ‘Now that being said, hampered projects will dictate sending you home, for it costs money to maintain living in wilderness. So go quiet and after 4 hours come back. We will ring a bell, so if you are near it will guide you home. If you get trapped in whatever way, we cannot come dig you out, so be very careful. OK.’ ‘Yes’ all said. Boss replied, ‘OK Good. You will get a big meal when you return. Thanks for your help.’ So every day for a week, or more, these 4 scouts were sent out to map out all areas in their direction. This was specified for it would enable the bridge group to enlarge the bridge area, secretively.
… On one of the mornings this Dug guy got heck from boss. He apparently was doing too good and mapped everything he came upon. Boss gave him a warning and that evening he did not get fed. He talked it out with the other three before sleeping that night and they gave him an apple and banana. He wondered why it was such a secret. Was this legal work they were doing, or were they pilfering or steeling? Dug was sort of asking this question but all were quiet, for Nobody knew.
… The next day Dug did some talking to the troops, working near bridge. He wanted answers but a lot did not wish to speak. They simply turned and continued working. A bit later Dug met a couple who worked together and they were willing to chat. They saw a small group of trees there so stepped to side of dirt path. These two chimed in saying, ‘Company is not true blue, and we are also wishing to do something, but what? The two looked about and quietly said, ‘Anything a little off and the boss will come down hard. So if we wish to lose our jobs, well just keep snooping.’ Then Dug said, ‘Or just do not come back. What is the right thing to do?’ Dug looked at the two fellows as they shrugged their shoulders and whispered, ‘We have to go. Sorry.’
… So next morning Dug was off as normal into his area, but he was doing some thinking all right. He thought so long on subject that he got lost in the hilly terrain and for did not keep track of where he was wandering. Then he heard something. There was a clearing a few feet ahead so he hid in bushes before thus. He was unsure of where he was, for this was farming land which he had not come upon on other times. He got nervous. Sure he wished to know the truth but he also did not wish to get fired. He stayed still and glanced around.
… In this clearing there was about an acre of land and most had been planted. He noticed a lady there bent over sewing seeds. She was garbed with long gowned and overhead large scarf obviously to keep sun off her. He only guessed she was planting seeds, for could not see otherwise. He thought of saying hi but she was 5 yards away and if heard him, would probably run. She was a sweet lady and looked young. Then Dug ducked as he heard a ladies voice, within the small wooden shack near. She was calling the lady in field. Dug could not hear what was said, but the lady in field did not budge. Then he heard another sound and looked to right.
… With this, he was quickly startled out of his quietness, by what looked like a tiger! In his fear he muttered, ‘There are no tigers here, What is this?’ He noted that whatever it was, it was going up that hill rather fast toward the lady, and Dug was going to have to make a quick decision. That time was a second away as he noted the dark stripes were being left behind. It was one of those light colored bears and a big one at that. He took a deep breath and ran, as hollering ‘look out, look out.’ It took a few seconds for him to get out there but the bear was being just as fast.
… The mother came out upon door step to see this guy running top speed as he grabbed the young lady and hurled her over toward home, saying ‘RUN.’ He stood there shaking in his army boots as bear was approaching fast. He went into a hollering and jumping as stomping the ground. The bear veered off a bit but stood very near, looking at this strange creature. Dug remembered he had a whistle in his back pocket and grabbed it blowing it as hard as he could. This made the bear wander off very slowly. It was still wanting to attack. Maybe another day. Haha.

… Well, as still shaking Dug watched the bear wandering off, then he thought of lady. He turned to see mother and daughter standing at doorway. Mom waved him to come. He smiled and came. Dug got the usual, as in thankyou for saving my daughter. ‘Stay and have something to eat, we were just going to have lunch. You like turkey sandwiches?’ Suddenly Dug’s eyes lit up, ‘Oh yes. Thanks.’ Mom said go to picnic table at side house and we will be there in a minute. Mother turned to look at Dug again for he stood still. She saw the bear in his eyes still and said, ‘Not to worry, the table is fenced in good. We like eating outdoors in peace. and mom smiled and went in. So Dug went and found table and was pleased.
… After Dug had relaxed a bit, they did come out with many sandwiches and a big jug of cool iced lemon aid. Mother said, ‘And you have at least two of these sandwiches Sir.’ Dug smiled and said ‘Sure!’ Daughter was very quiet and did not say much. She kept her face covered, but mother was full of talk. She continued on with, ‘What brings you to this area. Have not seen you here before.’ Dug said, ‘Oh it is my job to map out areas for my company.’ Mom asked, ‘What company.’ Dug said, ‘Not sure, but they are building a bridge way over those hills there.’ ‘Oh, well progress I would say.’ ‘Yes’ agreed Dug, ‘But i was not thinking straight so ended up out of my area. sorry.’ ‘Oh Well, do now be sorry! I am sure not. You saved my daughter you know. That bear would have overtaken her no problem. I was watching Sir.’
… Mother in long dress and apron about went on with. ‘That is a loud whistle, can I see it Sir.’ ‘Sure’ said Dug as he took it out of his back pocket. ‘Yes’ said the mother, ‘And where would you get something as this. My daughter could use it to her advantage.’ ‘Oh No doubt yes. Good Idea’ said Dug. He thought for a minute and said, ‘Well I am not from this area. I come from Sheldale quite far, over in the east there. The job I have is new so I am a bit away from home.’ Mother smiled and said, ‘All the better for you to have another sandwich there. Have another drink too.’ Dug smiled and took another. He was getting full now, but with getting lost and possible not finding way home till late, this would be a buffer in case Boss decided to deprive him again of food.
… Dug replied saying, ‘I will take this one for the road thanks. I should get on my way too.’ ‘Oh’ uttered mother. Wait and I will bring you a plastic for that.’ ‘Good and thanks.’ So in rushed mother as Dug said, ‘What is your name? the daughter smiled and looked at Dug. She had a beautiful twinkly in her eyes. Made Dug forget what was happening as he stood there with a half smile on his face. He was caught in that dreamland others often talked of. Limbo is a better word for it. He could not say a thing as mother came rushing back with bag. She said, ‘Here, Oh I do not even know your name!’ Dug snapped out of it and said, ‘Yes?’ Mother looked puzzled saying, ‘Your name Sir?’ ‘Oh Sorry, it is Dug. Get a little fogged in brain with this hot sun you know.’ Smile smile.
… Dug turned is eyes back to daughter who was still looking at him. Dug asked again, ‘And what is your name?’ Daughter said, or almost said. But mother interrupted with, ‘Oh its Mary. She is my niece. We call her daughter for my hubby and i never had a family.’ ‘Oh that is good.’ ‘Eh’ uttered mother, as Dug snapped out of it again, he said, ‘Oh i do not mean it in that way, sorry. I better get out of here or I will get myself into troubles. Nice meeting both and I may venture again. Right now i am in hot water. I have to find way back to job.’ ‘OK’ laughed mother, ‘You have food to keep you well.’ Yes thanks’ and off went Dug in a hurry, which way? Oh I think it was this way. ‘Yes’ there are the bushes there. ‘Got to hurry. Oh Bother.’

… Now Mary who did not meet many people, was tickled with this encounter. He was the most debonair person she knew. He was strong in his stance and Mary felt protected when he was near. As the two were cleaning up picnic table Mother had her own comments. Such a nice mannered fellow. Did you see his smile. Lovely teeth too. He comes from a good family Mary. Did you think so?’ Mary did not say much but felt warmth within her. She was happy and that was all that counted at this time. So mother continued saying nice things and fishing to see what daughter thought. But daughter was not concerned. she was blissful.

William’s trip to the big city.
… The three guards and William travelled miles to get to the city William’s king resided over. He was a just king and cared for his people, but he himself had not much confidence. The guards taking William into city, had gathered provisions so the trip was Ok but hot in that sun. As they got closer to the mountainous horizon the landscape changed. From open desert land to a house here and there and then a dirt road along a few trees there. The guards took William into an area where several shops were. There was a horse stables and tackle shop where the guards and William rode onto lot. They left the horses at trough for a well disserved watering and feeding. They went in and paid for horses care then scouted about area.
… Near was a place that rented cars. So off they went in this moderate vehicle as the street got fewer trees and more building’s. As the buildings became larger and taller they stopped into a café to rest. They had spent the whole day riding. They found a local games store and had a couple of games of snookers before heading out. With coffee in them and a small meal, they were happy to continue.
… Now gassed up and heading out towards more mountainous areas, our two saw On the horizon, this castle type building with three peaks or spirals. Building was of red and white brick. Quite a sight. They could see the guards near the peak of the three spirals and the guards were waving a white flag. A welcoming flag.
… It was shortly after that they came to a tall fencing of dark mettle which enclosed a large open areas with older large trees in places. The guard there, greeted the guards with William and all were ushered through the gates into a white driveway which wound up toward the castle. Very hilly in areas too, with large gardens for food and a rainbow of flowers. William and group had arrived just before the Summer Flower Day. A festive season for celebrating life. All the flowers would be given out free and the food would go to those less fortunate through the summer months. There were at least 2 workers tending gardens and a small truck burdened with fresh cut flowers. It was a time of many visitors within their city.
… Needless to say the dining area was all set up for visitors and kitchen was very busy. Many tables got a small bundle of those beautiful flowers. It was not officially opened till tomorrow but when King Damian heard from his guards that William would be approaching, he hurried the kitchen to have an early start. So the guards and William were delighted and were able to wash and have a small drink of wine before dinner. But this King was not idle. He had a package for William to take back with him. It was instructions and deeds of land proclamations. It has longitudes, latitudes and altitudes all marked on this rather large map. No mistaking the river.

… These bridge people were not welcome and were invaders upon other lands. king had a meeting with others and it was all arranged for William to march back and put things straight. Damian met them for that good dinner and later they went into meetings. Out back there was a truck of guards ready for the trip. All hoped it would be a peaceful trip, but with bridge guards armed, King Damian was not sure what would happen. He sent out a guard which was more a diplomatic person than a guard.
… Before our group left, they sent a message to the scouts in our area of what was transpiring. It would be a day or two journey there but our groups have to be rested before they attack. But that was in the plans. But major problem is, our people do not know that this area the bridge was built upon, has a large mine being excavated by the Bridge people in secret. Depending how important this mine is to the squatters group, would dictate if they wish to fight to the death. So hope for the best.
… Just as our group with William, set off for home, King Damian gave William a letter. Read this secretly please. William acknowledged with a nod, wondering what the heck. So on the long ride home, the guards aloud William space and he could read the letter along the way.
… Well it was basically a help note. Damian is not rich and back home there has been more rules set up not of Damian’s land but the land all about including Damian’s land. There were higher taxes and a threat to clean up the ambience of environment there. William knew what that meant for in Damian’s land the streets were full of holes and the brush were growing along streets. But most had horses and the horses took comfort with the greenery, often stopping as rider speaks to the next rider. Languid circumstances.
… Now the major cities want better cities. Pavement and proper walks and gardens. Even so much as to clean up after horse 3 times a day. This was a death wish for Damian, for he was already low on funds and here he may lose the land, where William and group are fighting to maintain. It does not look prosperous for King Damian right now. William understood and thought long, while on that long trip into wilderness. His job just got harder for he has to help their king. He knew he had to win as they rushed towards the fighting ring. There was some relief in that King Damian provided William with 50 more guards on horses. Although they would come in a week or so, it gave the rest time to plan out their regime. Apparently those men in that truck were waiting orders to clean up horse stuff before night fall. No help there.

Chapter Four.

More Twists on the Path.
… It was about this time too that Dug was to work in mapping out a new area. He did not wish to go for was frightened by the guards with guns that kept coming near the bridge area. Now Dug as most, did not know of the mines. it was kept secret by top guards there. But through Dugs job the bridge people were claiming more and more land. Put up a building structure of type and place a guard there. Interrogate all who come near. A scare tactic to the innocent. By now the bridge people had much land but kept seeing how much more land they could get without a struggle. Blinded by riches.
… So on this day Dug was to go out into near areas. He knew it was near where he had ventured once before but he did not know he would be running into the very house Mary and mother were residing. The first time as you may remember, he was lost. But as he came to that clearing again he remembered very clearly what happened.
… But this time, there was no bear which had posed a good introduction of himself the first time. But to Dugs relief, mother and daughter were in view as out tending flower garden as normal. By seeing this Dug knew she belonged to King Damian’s domain. Dug did not belong to this tribe. He was not sure who he worked for with the bridge people, but he came from his land that had celebrations in fall for the harvesting of food. Dug feels the bridge people do not believe in celebrating. They want money only. He gets paid minimal for these days. a slaves wage is what he gets.
… As he was deep in thought, for had many miles to go yet, it was early day and Mary’s land was reached early. He was to scout past this small town to see how large it was. As he was staring and watching, the mother and daughter had packed up flowers and a bag of food and were heading into home. Dug panicked for wished to at least say hi. He called out as mother and daughter were on door step. They turned to see who called them, as they witnessed a young man floundering through the trees and bush that protected their little garden area.
… Mother said to daughter, ‘Oh it is Dug.’ Mother went in with all the bags as telling daughter, ‘Go say hi then come back. We have to take cart into town for celebration.’ ‘Yes, I will speak to him a minute’ said Mary. Mary went gingerly out into yard again. Dug was happy and said, ‘I was in area and thought to say hi. You are of King Damian’s tribe I see. Mary smiled and agreed. ‘We are on our way right now. I cannot stay, sorry. We will be in town tomorrow. It is an overnight jaunt. I have to go, thanks.’ Dug smiled and kissed her hand as she pulled away to turn and run toward mother’s call out front on dirt road.
… Dug was disappointed he could not talk longer but when he heard the daughter Mary talk of a road this alerted Dug greatly. This was other’s land. He had to tell his higher up. He got out his map he drew on, as he watched Mary disappear into front of house. He followed shortly after for had to see this road for himself. It will be drawn on his map. He did get out front as horse and cart were traveling slowly down this dirt road. It was fairly well trod and Dug made a note of that too. He was kind of happy, for this is an indication of his working out in field. Sometimes there is nothing to draw for just bush and tree all around. The instructors kind of get suspicious of those days. Are you doing anything out there? Or just wasting our time? But as Dug was watching this dirt road, he saw a car also. He realized this is truly an area taken over by others. He thought, ‘End of bridges property.’

As the Cat is Away.
… While Dug was working the fields in Mary’s area, Dug’s groups of grey guards would go out and gain more land where inhabitants were found. If it was an easy enough pursuit they simply kicked people out by gun point and kept a guard or two in area. Like a cancer upon this land. This day was no different and guards came to a cave in hills and chased out three of our people. They had no choice. The Guards had guns already to fire and they hollered to next tunnels in area. ‘Get out now or we will come at night and shoot all who are within.’ So with this our people fled with the first cave invasion. They ended up across the river, with Dargan’s house and all talked of what to do.

Who Else did Dug Betray?
… When Dug got home this day and told boss of the roads near Mary’s place, Boss said, ‘Well … we will have to go to that area and find out who owns the lands. They are probably squatters and we have the bigger army. As Boss was viewing Dug’s map, he asked, ‘Is this made to legend?
… Now Dug was in alarm. He turned white As he realized, this was the first sign of ruthlessness. and To boot, he sold out Mary and her mother. But who else has he sold out? He had an about-face, but could not do much with troops all around. He would be abandoned even killed for knowing too much. He did not say much more and excused himself to go shower and retire. Boss said, ‘Good work Sir. See you tomorrow. I may get you to go there again and help invade area. Great work. You will be paid well.’ Dug cringed as he quietly went to shower.

… After that Dug did some thinking over night. He got ahold of hot peppers and ate a few. He was raging with temperature, then he went to boss. ‘I am sick. I have to take the day off please. I feel terrible! You have the map I made of that area. Your troops can take care of that without me.’ Boss got nurse to take temp and sure enough it was high. ‘Yes sir, you stay in bed today.’
… Dug was so relieved. He had to get to Mary’s to help them. But wait, they would not be at home! Dug had to do something. He just suddenly took off with raging fire within him. Along the way he drank water from lake and jumped in a few times. As he got into Mary’s town and asked where the flowers were being handed out. People there pointed him to a large building in central town area. Dug approached a rather large building of Barn statue. He gingerly went within to many people there. Sure enough there was Mary with a bunch of people up near front. Mother saw Dug first. ‘Oh Hi there. she called. What brings you Here?’ Dug approached them with head down. He said, ‘I am not what i want to be. At this point I am a messenger with bad news. My troops whom I did not know would do this, are going to take over your home. You cannot go back there. They have guns and will run you off.
… I am very sorry it was partly my fault. I did not know what they were going to do. I was just to mark on map where things were, so I marked your home on map. Today they will come. I do know that they will not take over your town area here. There are too many people. Your people must be ready. Do your people have guns to protect yourselves.’ Lucile uttered, ‘Oh yes. We have a small army. Are they approaching other small areas?’ Dug said, ‘Yes I believe so. How many in your army are there?’ Lucile answered ‘Oh i think it was 15 but it became 25 a few months ago.’ ‘Oh No’ uttered Dug. ‘They may get you too. My group has at least 50 troops. There are 25 guarding the bridge area where we started. I know there are others in 3 different places other than bridge area. Can you get more troops?’
… Mary’s mother replied, ‘Yes, Come with me.’ As they walked through this large building which looked like a barn with all the brace work showing, there was a party atmosphere. Big balloons of festive colors. Kids with candy pops and popcorn in hand. Adults with wrapped presents, probably gotten for Christmas events coming soon. Suddenly, ‘Pop’ goes a balloon as all in area jumped a bit and turned heads to sound. But that sound was quickly muffled with the rides and games all about. The straw, fresh straw under their feet, was a good pale color and helped to lighten this big old barn up, and any whom dropped ice cream or other eats, it was not a problem. Just sweep it about and it was gone within the thick strawed floor.
… Shortly after, Mother Lucile caught her eye on the leaders of township. She and her followers, went up to these three gentlemen in suits, off in a corner sitting in chairs. Dug followed her and was right beside her as Lucile approached these chairs. The middle guy said strongly, ‘Hello Lucile, What can I do for you?’ Mary’s mother said, ‘Oh Sir, This gentlemen here is telling me of troops that may come to our town to take it over. How many troops do we have in town?’ Governor Glen turned to Dug and asked, ‘Sir, How many troops does this group spoken of have, do you know?’ Dug said, ‘Not sure but at least 50.’ Gov Glen replied, ‘Oh that is all right. We can ask the town of Belfort to help out. They have 100 troops last I heard of. We ourselves in Cleamont here, … We have I’d say 75 troops in all.’ Dug breathed a sigh of relief. So much so, that government saw this.
… Governor Glen said, ‘Come sit here Son! As he got up and got another chair from the stack. ‘Lucile can you bring a donut or two and coffee for this lad, he needs a Break.’ Dug gratefully went around and almost fell into chair. After those hot peppers and the shock of no sleep last night he was ready for any kind of rescue. After he ate he did totally relax and almost fell asleep. He remembered Mary and perked up to asked governor ‘Please could you help Mary and her mother, to find a place to stay for a few days.’
… Dug then explained to Governor Glen, what happened in detail and it was agreed with Lucile, to arrange a place to stay in a hotel a few nights till things settled down. Glen said, ‘I will send a couple troops to Lucile’s home to stake out the place. What is the address?’ Dug smiled, for did not know. Lucile told the lady beside her all that was needed and Mary was happy for a room elsewhere.
… Governor Glen also said, ‘Lucile, we are about to pave a road in your area. We will put it by your lot and put up a proper fencing around as well. You keep that garden growing and we will make sure area is protected. And again, Thanks for the flowers this year. You grow them with such care.’ Lucile smiled and got an address from the person she was talking to. So all was set up.
… Now Dug didn’t know where Mary lived, for he never approached via front of home. He was just relieved knowing all would be OK. Now he had to get back and figure what he was going to do next. He couldn’t just leave this situation as it was. He was now part of the problem.
… So in that Barn where all activities were settling, Dug sat quietly in the chair designated to him. He then ventured to ask Governor Glen if any place was at war near here. He hesitantly commented, like in Sheldale area. Governor said ‘Sheldale, Oh no, that is a big city. They can care for themselves. Haha.’ Dug just smiled for it has been so long since he has been home and he had no interest in any other human endeavors. Lately its been Mary and her mother. But other than that it is how to survive. Remember that boss gave him warnings for marking every shrub on that map. Dug is a little bit unattached to reality. But for now Dug can relax, for he knows Mary and mother will be living in a town hotel of area. His thoughts went to bridge area as he made up his mind to go back.
… Through next few days Dug managed to use the pepper story again, so got out of work to plan his next steps. But in all his planning, it always came around to that fact that he had to go home. He did not wish this, for as normal, family had him pigeonholed as to who he was and what he would do. He tried to phone home from Mary’s town but it always said, Number not in service. So his only thought was he had to make that long trip back to his home.

Chapter Five.

William’s Home Coming Feast.
… One of our top people got message from William that he is on way home. Our camp hurried about to prepare for a feast, a home coming feast. They were wishing their leader to return and it is about time. Too many things happening that stipulated some official rules and plans. There were 2 more raids on their cave area and many were making an emergency camp closer to the waters. Some thought that may stop the raids, for the guards of bridge area always said, Stay near river that is your domain. Our people were beginning to think that way. This area would be OK for a while, for this is fall and the river was often quiet this time of year, but some were not comfortable near that river again, after experiencing that rude breakfast feast last year.
… Word got to Dargan’s land on opposite side of river, so they went into action and got 2 pigs for the harvest feast this year. They too were waiting word of the status of their land, they had tentatively been occupying. So back at Williams cabin where the guards mostly stayed, the few troops were stirring for it was early morning. Jeff and two guards were out clearing fire area. Soon breakfast would start. They were just waiting more persons to come out of the caves.

… So it did not take long and three other people, one a child, to come out for breakfast. As Jeff was starting a fire by bringing dry wood, here comes Bronze and Taniya Dargan with a cart holding 2 young pigs. ‘Hi there, Welcome.’ said Jeff. Taniya in lead said, ‘Yes, thanks for starting a fire. I am starved and look forward to this as all of you. Your lead William is coming home. We got a telegram first thing this morning, in fact it woke us up.’ ‘Oh’ said Jeff. ‘Sorry about that. I wonder why they did not contact us?’

… Suddenly a bustling noise came which alerted all of them. Just then they all saw a runner come rushing through. He said, ‘This is for Sir William’s Camp. Do you have ID Sir.’ Jeff got out his ID and Delivery fellow said, ‘Yes, you are William’s righthand. Thank you Sir’ as he handed Jeff an envelope and hurried on through the woods, to disappear within seconds. Off to his next destination.
… Some were surprised that Taniya got info of Williams trip home sooner than they did. That is the deeds of the messengers that roam these vast lands. Often by horseback but sometimes via foot in rockier or swampier places. These people were cross-country runners, maintaining the lifeline in many cases, with news of importance or simply of interest. Communication is very important for anyone’s life here.

… Jeff opened letter right away as Tanya and Bronze brought pigs and set rakes up near fire. As Jeff glanced at letter Tanya said, we need to set pieces of meats near fire to brown the inner meat. Tanya called, ‘Who all wants ham for breakfast?’ Several voiced yes and she tried to count in her mind and place the pieces on racks near fire. Jeff nodded aha. as Bronze and Tanya continued to set up meats. they are as hungry as our group. Well vibes changed quickly and all cleared that breakfast area so the fire had a chance to bellow forth.
… So in our camp area, as Tanya and Bronze chatted with the guards, the guards relaxed for these folks have taken over this camp fire for have been here before. All in camp knew they were pros at their task. They sat about and exchanged local gossip as Dargan’s worked their magic. These pigs would be simmering for many hours But right now pieces are done for breakfast eating.

Williams Home.
… The next afternoon here comes William and a few guards into their sparely treed camping area. They could smell the smoke and saw the fire. William wondered what was happening but quietly moved in to find all was a jolly conversation. Jeffery welcomed all as everyone settled. As time went on, William was able to tell Bronze of the situation and William, Jeff and Bronze started talking of plans. These top fellows were all a bit miffed but then William said, ‘Do not forget that a troop of 50 will be coming within the week. The best thing we can do to prepare, is stick about bridge area and plot our plan.’ ‘Yes that was a good idea.’ uttered another, ‘Observe the Territory.’

… Now unbeknown to William, our little camp here was already staking out the bridge properties. There were a couple of young lads that wanted to help. So it was granted, that they could go toward bridge area but do not show themselves. There were so many trees there that It would be hard for them to be seen. It was further stipulated that the area our troops took these lads to, was the only area the boys could spy from. But what was not known to the guards who set this all up, was this Secret Mine, as the boys called it. This mine was in back of site away from prying eyes. The young lads were excellent hiders and they would stay there for a few hours each day.
… Well, as our two young lads watched with binoculars and stayed hidden well, they soon realized that there was a smaller tunnel in another hill, where a person went into once in a while. Not often maybe twice a day. The other way into mines, was busy and often workers were there talking and laughing as they wandered about and built or straightened up the outside areas. It was the main entrance that was by far better to watch, for much more active and interesting. The young ones saw on 2 occasions, that this other tunnel entrapped a worker. The lads were a bit nervous of why. This worker did not look any different then others, like in the way of wearing jail uniforms, except this one person often had a red hat on. Later in day the two lads would quietly come away and sneak home. That was enough for that day.
… Now these two kids were smart. They knew William was back and they wanted to tell him of their findings, so they waited when everyone was settled around the campfire that evening. In this way they could go to William and talk quietly, so not many heard.
… Well this night the young lads managed to get into camp. As William was cogitating by fire in his comfy chair of sticks and grass, he heard a whisper and turned to see a young lad. William smiled and said, ‘Struth, You should be in bed.’ The young lad disagreed, ‘No, I have to talk to you sir. Cecil and I found a new tunnel as we have been spying on the bridge people. They have a tunnel that they go into only once in a while. We went there and heard them talking of all the riches.’ William in disbelief asked ‘Are you sure.’ The lad made a face. William seeing this young one’s dreamy smile, said ‘Thank you. Now you go to bed. Its an early day tomorrow.’

… Bit later, William called Jeff and another as they quietly had a chat about the young lads. ‘Is this true’ asked William. ‘Yes’ answered Jeff. ‘They wanted to help, you now, double 007 stuff. So we found this area behind the bridge and tunnel, away from where they are digging the foundation. We set the Young lads up there in the trees and told them not to get caught. So they go there everyday. Its good experience for them Sir.’ ‘Hum…’ uttered William, but as there was other stuff to discuss William and Jeff sort of let the discussion go.

50 Troops Arrive.
… Well in the next few days, they had a wonderful party with ample eats. But William’s mind was on the prospect at hand. As days went on, the 50 troops did come from king Damian. With the map given them, they were able to come in back door. A few stayed with others to spy in tunnel area. Guards kept the general public alert, especially with our camp now very full. (So full that they were in danger, of passer byes reporting them.)
… When the officials saw the situation, they went to Jeff to talk, ‘Please take more troops from our camp here and send them to the bridge area to see firsthand what is happening there. It will be just a stake out for a few days. We are far too crowded here Sir.’
… So as more troops snuck over and watched the antics of their opposition in bridge area, others stayed at camp and dug caves to hide in. The guards knew, ‘This was a coverup so the enemy will not know where they were. ‘We are quite venerable here with so many guards.’
… Meanwhile, King Damian’s Troops saw that Being in campgrounds, camp was so full not all could be hidden. So it was soon after that, the troops of King Damian had a plan. They passed it by William and he agreed, ‘Yes we need to dig our own tunneling system. This would solve our venerability. The other group would not see if we were here, as some of us could hide in trees about.’ ‘Yes’ agreed William ‘thanks for your info.’
… Then William called attention to Donald. He was a tunnel expert of past. He was pleased he could be of help with his knowledge. He asked, ‘Do you wish a permanent tunnel or a safety zone for now?’ William replied, ‘Fancy that, more than one. Well we have this one only, pointing to a carved out area in a hill. Maybe we just need more of that. Donald said, ‘Or maybe both for fighting and living.’ William agreed, ‘OK.’ Donald replied, ‘Well sir, in that case we need a super saw to cut rock.’ Jeff added, ‘Well we could start in easier land and just start the tunnel. We need to be more secretive right now, or as soon as possible. All these guards here, are too much. We should have thought of this before they arrived. Any walking by area will see us out in open with fire going. A sure way for others to come and tell us to get out, by gun point.’
… With that, A trooper suddenly stood up and said, ‘Oh no, i would not fall for that. My gun sir would be ready along with Tommy’s and Jap here. we will guard this camp for you.’ William was impressed with the steadiness but realized these were trained troops. Not like his, who were friends of past. He was dealing with pros now. But he was still impressed and agreed. ‘Yes, you three guard this camp area. we will start slowly with tunnel so to not make anyone suspicious. For all we know people, these troops of bridge area may already know we are here. We do not know their boundaries which are expanding daily.’

Secrets of the Bridge People.
… Now the bridge people were getting antsy. They have a boss in Shetland where William’s King Damian controls. This bridge Boss even works part time in King Damian’s city. He knows somewhat what the orders are, going to William’s group. There has been a couple of slip-ups but our group and William, do not see this yet. There is a rhythm to the order of things. Each side is playing the other knowingly or not.
… Bridge boss Clarence, also knows there are more troops being deployed into Bridge people’s area but not of their teams. Thus Boss Clarence is in a stew. He is sending many notes out to his troop warning them that not all around area are Sleepy villages. Boss Clarence thought he would have River Team’s land also, as soon as he got more troops into bridge area. But he was not fast enough. With more troops being seen by Bridge Team, it was another opportunity lost.
… So Clarence specified to his troops, ‘Ship ahoy, My warning to you is obvious. It has been rumored that the time is near to alter the river. So, do be aware of any loud water noise for if you are near the river you may not live to debouch that later. But to your benefit, if you could find a way to use that incident, do so. It may save you a lot of fighting.
… Boss Clarence gathered his top people and discussed plans. He said, ‘You people rock. Now the best way to gain land is how Stephan here has told us. Before this River Bunch gets a troop ready to invade us, Hells Bells, like we did with cave dwellings, if you remember, we need to quietly go to their river area and oust one at a time each of the dwellings.
But this must be done quietly.
… Boss Clarence went on with …You spy on the group and if they have a party as Timothy saw yesterday, that is the best time that we invade quietly and steel or throw out their belongings from their huts and take over. It is a slow way to gain land but it has always worked for us in past. I fear they may be catching on to our plans though, but that is all the reason why we need to act now, before it is too late. So be prepared. All you new soldiers go to the river area and pilfer a bit at a time, so to gain their land.
… But also gentlemen, I must warn you, we will be altering the river soon. It is almost time for a change. I would say in next 5 days. …
I will go into that after coffee. Right now it is break time, so come up and grab what you wish. 2 food items and a drink is all. Rationings are short as normal. Sorry.
… So as the men were busy, Boss Clarence did some thinking and jotted down several things. He decided to write a letter, to leave with the leaders of the new group that will be heading for the bridge area. They have to make their plans anyway. Clarences is in charge of the original group only. When other troops come from main cities via owners of thus city, They have their own ways to divide and conquer. This may be the new groups for river area, when it is put back to flow normally.

Dugs response to his Teams Plans.
William announced. ‘Struth, I know that the bridge people are finding out what we are doing sometimes. Dug is beginning to know of Bridge People although Dug is quiet mouthed, at this point. Dug has thought for a while, that our people should dig a deep tunnel, for security from the Bridge people. Maybe even live in these tunnels. William went on saying, ‘Truth, The Bridge people are wanting to take over all land in this area, I feel this strongly. They have got to be stopped.’ But our group may be asking Dug for his help for King Damian is not rich and grasping for straws. How to go about that is another matter. War is an expensive thing, especially when our group has no army.
… Again, Dug spoke to William of the constant gun play. Dug said, “You need to dig tunnels to live in.’ William did have thoughts of that recently but sat quietly. Dug said, ‘I can give you some moneys to help, not too much but some. How would you go about that?’
… William explained, ‘Well it is an excavating in the proper soil. If tunnel is not strong it will be a death trap. Trickery! But as we do that we need to take rubble in for analyzing. Fancy that, There are many good rocks within a mountains terrain. Subject was mentioned for about a week but then was dropped.
… There seemed to be a lot of planning but no activity. This concerned Dug, for he knew generally what the Bridge People were doing, for he was also one of them But not of his choice. Now on the other hand, William knew Dug was of Bridge People and that he was not stupid. If the Bridge People suddenly turned up with more guards, Our team of Damian’s could be washed permanently down that river. William has thought in past, is this why these people let river flood in that fateful spring. Were we making too much progress or encroaching on their plans too far. Both sides were a bit confused. But a bit later, Dug was in alarm when heard of Bridge People going to attack, again.

Back at the Bridge group’s dwelling..
… Dug was asked by his Bridge group to go to office and report how he felt things were going. Their boss has gotten more troops but he wants even more. Boss Clarence gave all a warning, Things are going to change and any who do not partake of this change, will be let go or punished. All were on edge in Bridge Group for sure. When it was Dug’s turn to speak to office persons, of what he felt would be the right move, he was still thinking of the vast land to the north of their bridge area. Our group with William as lead, were in south of them. With Dug being friendly with our group, he did not think like others in Bridge Group. Most of them were warriors waiting the opportunity to strike and take over vast lands.
… As Dug was explaining of all the land in north, that 4 lads drew on their mappings, he overheard something in the next office. It shocked him and he could not say much more. He cut his conversation short and complained of not feeling well. They were getting used to this for Dug had some allergies. Boss Clarence said, ‘Well I hope you help us when we need you, Sir.’ ‘Oh yes’ uttered Dug. ‘Of Course.’ He quietly excused himself and ducked out.
… Dug was not 100 percent sure what he heard in that next office but it did not sit right with him. He was in a panic. He went to his room and lay there for a minute, then changed to warmer clothing and ducked out back door. There were a couple troops there but he smiled and said, ‘I was going for some fresh air. It may settle my stomach.’ He patted himself on belly and said, ‘Dinner was too Good.’ All three laughed as Dug went wandering quietly into the spars woods.
… So Dug went north on purpose then back tracked south as could. He had to save William’s group. The closer he got to William the more of a panic he was in. He said out loud, ‘They will shove them to ground and shoot them and it will be all over.’
… As Dug approached William with our team, he tried calming himself down. All were quietly settling for the night. The fire was crackling a bit and twinkling in the darkness. If fact Dug almost did not make their camp. It was dusk in area so could not see, but he had a good sense of direction so this saved him. He saw William and went toward him quietly. One uttered, ‘Hi Dug, I did not know you were still here.’ Dug smiled and said, ‘In a minute. thanks.’ Guard furrowed his brow wondering what the heck. Dug went up to William and said a couple words, and they disappeared into the general meeting tent. By then there were several troops of Williams on the alert. What the heck as they looked at each other. Dug was a very outgoing warm person, very willing to make much sound with speech. Tonight was first night he was clammed shut and pleading to William their main boss.
… Boss William and Dug went into tent as Boss said, ‘Cool down Sir. I have a group spying on the bridge people. They will warn us of problems. We have guns here, so we are not helpless.’ ‘No No’ said Dug. ‘Boss Clarence has gotten 50 more troops the last day or two. He will out maneuver you in an instant. This is their plan, I heard as much. I know not when though.’ William was trying to calm Dug. It is alright Dug, we have things under control.
… Dug did not know what to think. He commented again on tunnels. ‘Balderdash! We can stay at entrances of our tunnels and battle them so they do not come into tunnels. How long would it take us to make a small tunnel just for fighting from?’ William whispered, Keep it down Douglas, there are young children sleeping here.’ Dug was almost to hollering as he said, ‘Easy picking, I need to know.’ William said, ‘We have an area for protection now. It is OK. Here have a beer.’
… Dug took it in disgust for he knew there was trouble, big trouble about to pounce. But he then stopped. When, was the question in his mind. As he guzzled down the beer he thought, maybe that is all good. It may not be till next week. I do not know. I cannot save them if they will not be saved. Boy I wish dad were here, he would know what to do. These people are not prepared for a war. I wonder if they have ever been in a war.
… Dug tried to console self and after another minute William called two top guards. Come in please gentlemen, ‘There seems to be a turmoil.’ ‘Yes’ agreed guard. ‘The group that was sent to spy on Bridge area, they heard talk of coming in and taking over our area. We do need to take shelter Sir.’ Yes’ uttered William, ‘I agree, we need to take shelter. Klein, Please take the ladies and children to our encampment tomorrow. And Dug! You go with them please. For now, Help them gather up clothing and other stuff. Tell them what to take there for their meals.’ Dug got up puzzled as if suddenly a tsunami had come ashore. He uttered, ‘Water is utmost important then protein and starch. Oh, By the way’ added Dug, ‘You must take children’s toys also. Keep the children occupied or there will be screaming.’ Dug looked down as now getting into the swing of things, then he announced, ‘Charmed, Here I will take this sack of potatoes to start.’ ‘Good’ uttered one of the guards. We have a box of meats here which i will take now.’ The guard turned to get the box of meat and uttered, ‘Oh Dale, please bring the barbeque and put here also. We will be traveling first thing tomorrow.’ Dug was Pleased and surprised. He thought, maybe they are more prepared than I thought.
… Well it turned out that the 2 young lads that go to spy on the bridge people also heard them talking war. The lads told the others late yesterday, so all were very prepared for an interruption. And Dug, he had settled down and was ready for some tough digging to make a good tunnel for these people. He thought they may have made a cave or something like that. It was obviously something he had not seen before nor heard of. He was hopeful. It was only a week ago that he saw them and knew nothing of such a shelter. He was pleased though just the same. I hope they have something half decent.

Chapter Six.

—-

Entering Tunnel area.
… As the first group of about 10 got to the hills near their open camp, Dug commented, as eyeing the area, ‘This here looks like a good mountain to tunnel into. Did you people bring picks or are they hidden somewhere here. A top trooper standing near, looked strangely at Dug and said, ‘No Sir, come this way.’ They went around another small hill that had a rock face. Well Dug was truly surprised as they went around that huge rock and marched into a three meter tunnel. It was not huge but is was a good start. They actually had an air hole in the rocky mountain roof.
… ‘Excellent’ uttered Dug. ‘You people are brilliant. When did you do this?’ As he gawked at the three top guards there. One said, ‘Oh thanks, it was this past week. We heard from our King back home in Shelburne that a group of freeloaders were going to take arms and muscle their way through some land in our area. Apparently Sir, there is a trader among our original group back home. They flushed him out and sent him to trial. We won. So the Bridge people are still wanting to fight and have gotten even more troops. We were warned beginning of last week by the small group, sent there to snoop.’
Another Guard chimed in with, ‘We also ran into the lower area. So we have been very busy, all of us. That back area we go to, you know, behind the tunnels there, that area has no interruptions and many trees to hide in. We met a couple of lads who helped us out also. They knew the ropes and explained what happens in area. So we stayed and watched.’
… As time goes on, our people excavated more tunnels and to their great surprise, they came upon bridge tunnels. They snuck in through small opening and saw what was happening there. They snooped about as they could but many persons were there. They were told about another smaller tunnel but did not come upon it. So they got first hand news, what was to transpire in near future. ‘We are all here to help Sir.’ Dug was relieved. He smiled as he had not for days and realized, He is not the only one in alarm. That was comforting.

Takeover Plans.
… One day Dug was working with his Bridge Team, out in field. He was closer to river and working down near to river, by orders of his guards in grey. They were planning to oust the coastal people (our people.) They did not fight and it was easy pickings. Their leader said, ‘If nobody objects they must not wish that land and it is open for others. We will take it and care for their land.’ Now Dug was there and he is very much on edge.
… Then on this one day, as coming along shore, Dug heard rustling in bushes. He did not wish to be seen, for who knows what would happen to him. Thus he stayed hidden as the gray troops got close enough that you could hear what was said. Sure enough, they were on their way to take a large portion of the river bank. Dug was beside himself. He knew one person could not do much. He also knew William’s group was prepared for this coming. Dug prayed for others to see, before Bridge Team descended upon William’s central camp.

… Later back at our camp, as William was sitting with Jeff they heard a ‘Sir Are you home?’ ‘Yes’ answered William. So Dug went in and told of his story and what they would be doing. ‘Sorry sir, I have to talk to you.’ ‘OK’ uttered William, ‘Here have a seat. Go on please.’
… Dug said, ‘My Bridge groups are planning to storm the coast area here. They have already started. If you do not put up a fight they will take over. My leader said as much.’ William replied, ‘But we have no guns, well we do but for hunting. I must phone my King. Sorry’ and he left the tent to sit in wooden roughed chair.
… William was in shock. He called king and told what was happening. King told him to hunker down and build that tunnel, hiding the entrance well. ‘I will be coming with 75 troops.’ William came back into camp announcing, ‘I have phoned Boss.’ But Dug was still sitting there in alarm. He knew his team would win but what of him. This is his only chance. What to do.
… Dug still sat in camp tent along with William and Jeffery. Silence was all about. Dug broke silence saying, ‘I know what my team will do. You have to have many strong troops to win. Have you been in a war?’ ‘No’ replied William. ‘Have you?’ ‘Well yes but as a small child. My dad was helping others at that time. 75 will not be enough.’

… Dug got up and went to William’s chair. ‘Please Sir, could you dig that tunnel very deep so we could live in there.’ William was serious, ‘Well that is what we had plan to do Sir.’ ‘Ok that is Good. It may be your only hope. The army I know of, in bridge group is strict. They will run you out. I have to go talk to some people. They may be able to help us. We have to have lawyers present. This land should be mapped out somewhere. People do not just come into a land without owning Hone of it.’
… William got up and acknowledged, ‘Perhaps, but we have a map here sir. That is what we are going by. But to get map and land lined up, it is sometimes difficult. There are no bushes on the map so we may claim some of others bushes by mistake. There are no lines in the sands Sir. What are you wishing?’ Dug was quiet.

… This settled Dug down and he made up his mind to get help. He announced, ‘I am going on a trip to get an army to step into this area and map out who is who. This army I speak of, has done this in other areas too and I was able to help when younger. May I take food from your group, Please.’
… William asked, ‘What is wrong with your bunch?’ Dug stated, ‘Oh Sir, this is going against them. I cannot do that. Do you wish my help or not?’ Jeffery said, ‘Well we cannot see too much carnage here. When are they going to come.’ Dug explained, ‘They do not just come. Surely you have watched them in their antics? They take a few square feet at a time. The first place they come to will run for security. Then the next one and if you keep running you will be run off your property. You have to fight the first small takeover or it will never end. That is how this group operates.’
… There was a pause, then Dug commented, ‘I have to go far. I need food. Please may I help you’. ‘Oh’ uttered William. ‘Not sure why. Our King Damian will be coming with 75 men and they are an army as you say.’ ‘Well that’s a deal of the day.’ uttered Dug. ‘That is a start. You prepare that tunnel and hide there guarding it all you can. I will return soon. But do not wait for me. I may not get my wish. I am hoping.’
… Dug went on with, ‘Then there is the care of my group. If I abandon them they may wish to hang me. So I may not come back if cannot get troops.’ ‘OK’ agreed William. ‘Wish you luck and take care of yourself. Thanks for all your advice. Come, we will fill your knapsack. Here.’ ‘Thanks’ smiled Dug. ‘I will try to get a troop to come.’
… Well, William gave Dug a cart and a donkey and sent Dug off, in the night. Better for him so troops will not find him easily.

Takeover of Coastal Areas.
… When Dug was away The bridge troop sure enough did advance. So much so that our group was badgered into that tunnel which became much bigger beforehand. They stayed silent with hidden entrance and the troupes eventually left claiming coastal waters with a fishing hut. Our team could see this so steered the other direction. William said, ‘We can manage. We have fowl to eat thanks to the good thinking of Christopher here. We can catch rabbit and chicken eggs from the hens are good protein. We do have to stay low but life will be quiet but meager.’
… William phoned King Damian often so he knew. But all he could do was to send troops and both Leaders knew it was not enough. This land here was a large area and becoming larger by the week, as claimed by the Bridge People. Our group would need twice the troops Damian had, just to guard their lands proper. But most land has been taken already, before Damian was ready to send even 75 troops. Our group housed the 10 troops King Damian sent the other week and they were still within the tunnel system. They spent their time at entrance of helping any of our people who left tunnels for business. It was cramped but OK for now. They half waited Dug and his army to come, but William had his doubts. Most minds went to space which was cramp at best of times. So let the digging begin.

Dug Homeward Bound.
… When Dug heard Damien has no money, he felt he had to go home to dad. But in reality, he is afraid of going home. What will dad do, take all his privileges away. You see Dug is still in that child-adult mode. He was only 15 when ran from home. He forgets that people do grow up, including him.
… As the days went on Dug was doing well. He knew the city he used to live in and that was not hard to find for it was a big city called Sheldale. But for him to remember where he lived in that big city, was going to be a problem. He got into outskirts of his city and found a phone book. He had parked donkey in a grassy section by the road and stood in phone booth for a half hour. He was trying to find his address. He knew his address but not the area where it was. It seemed to have disappeared. He was cold for it had been raining and he got soaked. He was out of money by this time too.
… As he gave up and came away from phone booth this gentlemen was coming down this hill where the donkey was grazing. ‘Hey mister’ called the man, .. ‘This is my land. Please park your cart elsewhere.’ Dug replied ‘Oh sorry Sir. We have been on the road for three days and I and my steed, smile smile, are very tired and hungry. We will move now thanks.’ ‘Do you have something to eat’ asked the man. ‘No that is OK. There must be a store here I have 2 dollars left. I can probably buy a loaf of bread. That is ok just some starch to keep me going.’ Dug turned and waved ‘bye’ and headed for the donkey. Suddenly He felt dizzy and fell as he tripped on a rock he could not see.
… Man came rushing to him asking ‘Oh are you OK.’ Dug was bewildered for a minute, and just lay there feeling the rain hitting his face. He was truly hungry. Could he make it to a store? As he was trying to get up, the man came and said, ‘Sir, You come up the hill here and i will give you food. Come!’ The guy wrapped his arm about Dugs waist and they walked up the hill together.
Well, this one was rich and they feasted on food. They chatted away and Dug discussed some stuff that nobody else knew. This man was impressed and asked if he could help. Dug was wishing he could, but how. The guy was just concerned for Dug and wanted to help him out.

Chapter Seven.

—-

Dug’s history….
… You see, Dug has a dad with an army. But nobody knows. As a teen, Dad sent Dug out to war. But there are other allies in that area, like explorers opening new lands. This enticed Dug much more than killing so he jumped without parents knowing. So parents know not where he is or how he is.

Rich Friends and Bridge Team.
Just because Dug is stymied where he is, dose not mean story stops.
… Clarence, the boss of Dug and bridge group, has given orders to his troop on what info he has secretly gotten. Bridge people are taking over more and more, and with guns in hand, they have little difficulty to get our group to move. This sends our group back into their tunnel which is fairly large now. In fact they have dug quite far and they are about to find the entrance to bridge people’s tunnel. But Bridge people plan to go to war upon Mary’s town in near future.
(Oh No. Hurry up Dug. Find your dad’s army and march in.)

… But at this point Dug was down on his luck. He had no money and had to rely upon the odd person who gave him a meal. This will not last long. He is exhausted and ready to give up. How do I find my dad he kept thinking. One morning he lay in the street with the one small blanket given him by his street friend. It comforted him a bit and made him realize how important friends were. As he lay there he thought, if only I could find dad’s army.
… Then he jumped up to sit there As his Donkey lifted its head suddenly in a startle. Dug thought long on what the name of his dad’s army was. It was called something and Dug heard it many times, but back then Dug was not interested. He did not, and was not going to kill anyone. That was barbaric to him. But what was the name. He thought of Dad’s name being Brent Saldana. With this he thought, I will look up Saldana today and see what I get.
… Thus as morning went on he wandered into town a bit more but could not go too far, for the street cops would get him. He has already experienced that harsh reality. So now he is hiding from the law in this large city, His city by birth, Sheldale. As he wandered he came to an area which remined him of past. He was unsure but wandered a bit more and came upon his favorite corner shop. This thrilled him for he was in right area. He saw his friend’s shop of childhood and gingerly went on in. As he saw his friend Tanner he called, ‘Hey stranger.’ Tanner turned and they ran and hugged hello. Dug talked to Tanner a bit saying he was trying to find home. Dug asked, ‘Do you have a phone book Tenner?’ Tanner was all smiles this morning which lifted Dug immensely. Tanner explained, ‘A rich person came in earlier and gave us a bunch of money. We are all very happy here. As talking on, as Tanner said, ‘Apparently this fellow has been friends with family for a while but i guess i was too young.’ Thus Tenner and his family were in heaven.
… When Dug asked for paper, well Tanner handed him papers for the week and asked, ‘You need a phone book? We are getting a new one. This one we have had for 6 years. It is obsolete anyway but all we could afford. Here take it. You will be doing us a favor to rid of it.’ Dug smiled and thanked Tanner, saying ‘Oh maybe now your luck will come to me. I still cannot find where home is. I am getting desperate. I am so hungry at times.’ ‘Oh’ Tanner almost shouted. ‘Come in and eat. Mom is making food for the years. Hahaha. I mean she is making Christmas pudding and the likes. You know, the important stuff. We will eat well this year thanks to the kind man with all that money.’

A Delightful Place.
… Tanner smiled a big smile and a tear came to his eye as seen by Dug. Dug said, ‘Oh I am happy for you all. Thanks for inviting me to a meal.’ ‘Yes’ said Tanner, as he came behind Dug and pushed him in, slightly, through all the curtains into their small home at back of cafe. And there was mom in kitchen kneading bread with berries within. Blue berries, looks like.
… As kneading she said, ‘See the table there, We have some bacon cooked this morning, and there is a bit of liver if you like it. Over there in that pan full of onions. Eat hearty. It is left overs from this morning, so have all you wish. We had a bonus from a long time friend, who has found his fortune. Thus he passed some our way. Life is good when you have good friends.’ ‘Yes Charisma,’ agreed Dug, as he eyed all the types of food on that kitchen table. In fact it was so full that Dug had no room to eat, but that did not stop him. He was so hungry he grabbed a stool in corner backed by coats, and sat eating whatever he had in his hand. It was some kind of roll with ham hanging out of it.
… Well as time went on he actually was helping put readied stuff on pans as they went into oven. He enjoyed that much, for there was all the food, an abundance of what he was aching for only a couple hours ago. Nice. He eventually ended up in their small three seated couch looking in old phone book for dad’s number or army. He was struck down though and could not help himself. He ended up crying saying, ‘I am doomed. All my friends will be shot.’
… Of course Tanner and his dad came out of what they were doing and went to him in living area. ‘What is the problem son?’ Dug explained basically what was happening and Tanner’s dad asked, ‘Who’s army are you looking for son.’ ‘Balderdash, I do not know the name of army and I have tried many times to remember. But it is my father’s army. His name is Brent Saldana.’ Mom eyed this young fellow, who had becoming skinnier after 2 weeks in dead ends. She then accepted, ‘It is getting late, we can put you up for the night, Please. We will find your Dad. Take it easy lad.’

Dug’s Brain Spark.
… So next morning bright and early, Dug was feeling better and with bacon cooking in the kitchen he was almost happy. He grabbed the phone book near the bed, so he didn’t even have to leave his warm cocoon. He has brain spark. He looked for armies and there was two in this book, but not any that sounded like his dad’s. He went out to their phone and quietly looked into the new book. There was only one army in this one? Well it was called Sheldale armed forces. He called although it may have been too early, but he was on a mission. And what do you know, someone answered the phone. ‘Good morning, how can I be of help.’
… Dug was unsure what to say so he asked. ‘Is this the army of Brant Saldana? Lady said, ‘No, it has changed hands. What exactly are you looking for Sir.’ Dug announced, ‘The address of the guy who used to have an army here.’ Lady asked, ‘Alright, what is his name.’ Dug replied ‘Brent Saldana.’ ‘Well’ answered the lady, ‘The army belongs to another now but the address of Brent Saldana was said to be at 1459 Weldon Ave.’ Dug was beside himself, ‘Oh thank you. Balderdash, I just want to go home. I have not been home for years and I have lost my way. Thanks lady,’ and he hung up. Dug merrily told Tanner’s small group and they had a big breakfast and gave Dug some money and sent him merrily on his way to meet his dad.

——

Still Homeward Bound?
… They had given Dug instructions of how to get there so with a bus ride or two, he was in front of this small cottage, resembling something like what he remembered. He went to front door expecting his dad to answer but after a few minutes it was his mother who answered. No dad to be seen. ‘Oh, Hi Mom.’ Mother was beside herself for Dug was her oldest. Her other son was at home too so they welcomed Dug into a cozy warm home. Mom is sweet and wants him to eat much food and rest for a while. He was very tattered within himself, for he had been in a war zone, for over a year. It gets one down in time. Mom could see this. She just wanted him to relax for a while. So it was done. Mother would not hear of anything else till he relaxed. He had asked about dad several times but mom just changed the subject. They were in the same house he grew up in with all its luxuries and expensive things. this made Dug truly relax again.

… Time went by and they chatted a lot about life. Then younger son had to go to work. But Dug was able to talk on with mother. Soon the little stories started coming out. All the little mishaps that are usually secrets. They laughed many times and other times had frightened faces. After a while things were quietening down. After a large afternoon snack Dug seeing all the food Mom had prepare, asked ‘Mother, do you have funds for all the food and upkeep of this place.’ Mother smiled, ‘Yes dear, not to worry. Dad’s army sends me a goodly among, each a month for the rest of my life. I am well taken care of. Thank you Son. That is nice of you to ask.’ A bit later as many time before, Dug asked about dad again. ‘Where is he? Will he be home soon?’ Mother sat there with a solemn look. Dug replied, ‘What is wrong, is he sick?’
… Mother without saying a word pulled Dug by arm up the stairs to a small hall with a spare room they did not go to. She shoved him to the one door there and Dug read it. It said R i P. Dug wondered, what the heck. Then his mind clicked in. ‘Oh, … That money you get will be from Dad’s inheritance. That is nice. You Do keep this place up well.’ Then Dug went silent and stood perfectly still. His mind shut down as if could not accept that.

Dug’s Worst Nightmare.
… Dug suddenly froze and fainted to floor in a pile. He was crying saying, ‘Dad cannot save us, All my friends are doomed. What am I to do now?’ Mom got down and was caressing his blondish hair. She asked, ‘What are you talking of?’ Dug sat up crying but was feeling kind of angry. ‘I came to ask dad for help. My group of many people are going to go to war and they will lose for sure.’ Mother replied, ‘Your Dad’s army is still alive Douglas, do not be so devastated.’ Dug straightened up and said sternly, ‘I am in a community that is new. All new people. Some are taking over all areas and forcing others into caves secretly. They will be shot if they are seen again. Now, You mean to tell me that dad is dead.’ Mom bowed her head but did not cry, for this was a few years back now. Dug was almost screaming, ‘What happened to his army. Is it still working? Oh dear what am i to do now. King Damian will be defeated and his city will be no more.’ Mom raised her eyebrows. She answered, ‘The King Damian?’ ‘Yes’ screeched Dug. Mother acknowledged, ‘Well Yes, I have met him. He lives not too far away from here, in next town.’ ‘Yes mother I have been there. I know.’

Mother’s Secret Weapon?
… Mother was kind of surprised. She thought her son Douglas was still in the army and would be stationary in their new army in town outskirts. Apparently her child was not as deprived as she thought, within his short life he has already travelled to the bigger cities. She looked at her son who had a very darkened face. She asked, ‘What is the problem, I may be able to help.’ Dug unsure of how she, his little mother of barely 5 ft, was going to be of help in a warring situation. Did she have a secret weapon? … Dug said, ‘Well if you have a big army at hand we need one to take out this Bridge Group of people, who are taking over all areas in this new land.’
… Dug went on with, ‘The people there do not have an army, for we are new in area. But these bridge people came, I feel before we had arrived so had their area already well established. Problem is they have made an army for themselves and are very evasive, but the fact is via King Damian, they are intruders upon this land, my land or my towns land. They are chasing us out of our caves by gun point and simply taking over. They are a large army with many strong. We have a few town groups near. But Damian Our king is not rich and only has 75 troops. Not nearly enough. I had told them my dad had a big army. Now I’m here and you tell me, not only he is dead, but he does not have an army?’

… Mom said quietly, (After Dug almost screaming at her.) ‘Dear, your dads army is still intact. They are 200 strong, would that be enough?’ Dug looked at her and said quietly, ‘Really. That will be why King Damian reacted to my saying something about Sheldale. I did not know it was such a large army…
… How could you help me mom?’ Mother smiled saying, ‘I know the person whom owns dads army. It was arranged that he get it for he was very loyal and Dads most reliant friend. I will give them a call now if you wish.’ ‘OK’ jumped up Dug. ‘That sounds great.’ Smile. Suddenly Dug remembered Frank his donkey. ‘Oh, I must go get my donkey too. I left him with friends. Can you keep him in backyard? He will keep your lawn cut for free.’ Mom smiled and said, ‘Yes if that be your wish. I like donkeys, they are very loyal and friendly. I had one when a child. They have very soft fur.’ ‘Oh really.’ Dug laughed. He agreed, ‘Yes they do have very soft fur.’

… So mother did phone Army of Sheldale. It took 3 people to get around but mother did get Mr. Dale Valicko on the line.
Mother told son, ‘Sheldale has 350 troops but 75 are occupied. When would this confrontation be taking place.’ Dug agreed, ‘The sooner the better.’ Dug also replied, ‘The town of Belfort I believe have 100 troops. Would that help?’ Mother relayed message to Mr. Valicko and answered Dug with ‘Yes, He will give Belfort a call, thanks.’ Dug instantly became happier. At least something was happening. Maybe he can save his people after all.
… Well mother got off phone after scribbling things on paper. When Dug got info that was on paper, he did not feel that great again. The army of Sheldale will send 150 troops out but it will be end of next week. There is another emergency just come up this morning. First come first serve. Mother told Dug, ‘Dale Valicko said he had phoned Belfort and they are willing to send 75 troops out in next few days. He asked me to get ahold of Belfort and have a chat to give them particulars.’
… Dug was getting more and more nervous of any info from that phone now. He didn’t know if it would be positive or negative. But he had no idea that these army’s accepted phone calls any time of day. Well within reason obviously. Mother said, That is enough calling at this point. I need my afternoon tea. Later I will call.’ She thought, Why does he not call. But she let that go for now.

… AOK so far.. Dug do not worry. Things are happening in other places. Dug got antsy and told mom he would be back later today. ‘But Mom, If i do not come back, rest assured I have found another avenue to follow and I will let you know when I can.’ ‘Sure’ smiled mom as she sipped tea at kitchen small table. Dug had his duffle bag on his back and quickly ducked out back door. He called back and said, ‘Have a good day, I will return later.’ Mom replied ‘Sure, be careful son.’ At that point she heard front door and her younger son just came home from work.

… Dug wandered for a while but then phoned boss of Bridge group. Dug finds out what the name of top person giving Bridge Peoples troubles, is Brent which is same name as Dug’s father. He has his suspicion’s and phones to ask one of the guards working in Dad’s army area. Dug figures it would be a case of going there to help this group but no. Guard on phone said, ‘You have to join their team.’ Dug talked on and finds out he has to be sworn-in by this Brent guy, the top person. it is same name as Dad and Dug has to see who this one is. So he does get into the line up but he does not know what he will do when meeting this Brent Guy. This guy has killed many even in Dug’s groups and Dug has many emotions of this. He is very nervous but Then he sees his dad. He was in shock for truly looks like dad! Dug did not know how to respond.
… When Dad was face to face with Son, dad utters a sharp sound and runs away into another room. (Now Mother was told he died but they had no evidence.) Dug forced his way into the rooms there, although guards had both of his arms. The three waited in front of Bent the leader of this whole regime. After some silence Brent said, ‘Let him go and leave. Then the truth slowly came out.
… Dad had run away for could not stand being defeated. And here again he has been defeated by his own son. Dug had found out the truth. There was his dad right in front of him. Dug told him point blank, Mom does not want a King, she wants a nice well mannered man who loves her. You will go to jail for a while if you simply give up now. King Damian will win Dad. He is a strong King.’ Dad Brent said, ‘I heard he was poor.’ ‘Dad, you can be poor in many ways and you can be rich in many ways. If you have no money but a loving family, you are their King. If you have lots of material commodities but you family hates you, you are a lonely man keeping hollow material belongings.’
… Suddenly Dad locked himself in a room there and called the guards to take the intruder away. Thus it was done. Dug was roughed around a bit and got the third degree as most intruders. Then was threatened to go or be shot. The guards threw him out a back door and Dug quietly left in disillusion. He thought he would get a hand shake from dad at least. But right away, he knew he could not tell mom. He knew it would hurt her in many ways. But Dug knew the truth, now.
… Well Dad was having his own problems. Brent was owner of army in Sheldale but with it changing hands to his best friend Dale, Brant was hoping to leave it behind. This was turning out to be an impossibility. Brent has just gotten orders to run his army into small towns near Sheldale.
When Bridge boss Clarence gave orders to flatten Cleamont, Mary’s town, Sheldale realized the rumors and gossip spreading about through the small towns, were not rumors at all. It was a real thing and if these groups were not curbed, Sheldale could see a significant army coming their way as well. Now Brant Saldana’s army is biggest in general area, so it is logical that the leaders of Sheldale call on their army to go help smaller towns around. Thus lead William and King Damian met and had many meetings. They summoned Brent’s army back into the works, although it is run by Dale now. But Dale knew this was a tall order, for most know that many small villages that have been taken over via this bridge group. So it is now or never, For a plight upon the earth like this army is showing, does not stop out of comfort. They are greedy and if they can take the bigger cities they have the upper hand in all.
So when Dug met his dad Brent, Brent was very complex already. He could not say much to anyone for these orders were just given him.

… Dug did spend another night with Mother but then felt he should go back to his group. Being unsure if they would punish him for being away, he had to go home to his home of now, just to get things straightened out. Suddenly, he thought, that is an excellent excuse. Family troubles. He will keep that as his excuse. Mother and son had a quiet visit next day and Dug left happy with situation. He promised her he would visit often. Just let us get that area freed from the freeloaders and things should settle down.
… So just before Dug was to leave, he had Heard that Mary’s town was rampaged by troops. He was not sure of that, but being away at his home for a week or two, felt he was left out. He was a bit timid to come back even to Mary, for he was not there in her crucial time. He could not think much upon that for was in fear. He wished his dilemma would just go. After all, his original job was to find his dad and that is accomplished with regrettable results.
… As Dug was going back to his camp, he was nervous for various reasons. But mostly that he did not know if all would be dead. He knew William and King Damian were making efforts to war and that was good in Dugs mind, for he knew His Bridge Team was always marching onward with their endeavors, and for all he knew, that river valley could already be flooded out and all be gone to the great beyond. His team knew what to do for were given orders of how to proceed. It was a true tried scenario before, told by head company.
… Well, Dug did make that long trip home and he rested saying he has been through a lot. He told his group ‘There had been home problems that I had to tend to. My dad had passed and mother was not well. You know Sir. Family stuff.’ He wiped his face and hid his head. ‘Sure’ was the answer. ‘Just give us some kind of warning next time.’ ‘Yes, Sorry sir. I was not in my right mind. It is shocking. Sorry.’ So Boss then asked, ‘So, Are you OK now.’ ‘Oh yes I will manage. Maybe I will stay low for a day. I feel very tired.’ Boss agreed ‘Sure, you take it easy. we will be marching on very soon. I want you to be with us and help out. it is important.’ ‘Ok, Sure. Thanks.’ Uttered a relieved Dug.

… In next day or two Dug went on his own, to spy on bridge group most of times. He wished they would all get up and leave. Dug went into north tunnels and the young lads showed Dug the hidden tunnel. He explored the tunnel but finds all missing. Knowing the mine will reassure him. He is stuck up near their tunnel inside. he hears the guards talking of a good fight. Dug was confused, but then the guards went and altered the damn to stop the river, thus they all ran out of tunnel again. At that time dug was in higher areas of tunnels. Dug sees the water run in and cleanse out tunnel. He phoned William and said, Clarence is changing the water flow now. Be ready!
… Our group did have 60 troops but Dug was concerned. Who will last through these fighting times. In what felt like the last minutes, Dug phoned to Governor Glen and got the devastating news of Glen’s city. After Dug hung up, he sobbed for a good hour. He knew mother and daughter would be dead. After all, Glen told him all was devastated. There is Not a building in sight. You could not have done anything. Glen said, ‘We have to get these people. After hanging up and having a good silent think, Dug viewed in his mind, all info he heard. There was Clarence and his higher of Brent. Dug had a smile. it said that Brent had an office in the wilderness. When Dug heard that, he chuckled, what kind of office would that be in the wilderness. He snooped through both tunnels but not a proper table was there. Is this a lie or a decoy. Maybe it mean, his office within our offices in Main town of Sheldale. Ha, that is largest city around. Must be a decoy.
… One time as watching Bridge Group, Dug saw something that sent chills up his spine. It was the uniform of these two guards. Rich brown and Golden edges to buttons, cuffs etc. This Dug had not seen before but stirred something up inside of him. He started to realize it was the coloring, as if he has seen this uniform before? Its funny what things can do to you. He eventually passed it off but it was unsettling. (Only a few guards from Dad’s army, here scouting area. Something from Dugs childhood.)

… Well, things were quiet for a few days, and Dug could rest and rejuvenate. Then One night a few days later, the head instructors of bridge group, gathered all peoples and told them of the accomplishment the senior army group had achieved. This was the flattening of Mary’s town.
… Now Dug was told this but he is suddenly trying to ignore much. He is in disbelief and stays near camp but out of sight. He cannot handle this info just now. After another night goes by, Dug gets up courage and goes to investigate. Dug jumps a horse and slows near outskirts of Mary’s town. He stops along a road with land grasses, as he gingerly looks over the horizon there. In the distant was mountains of which he had not seen before. Normally he sees large tall buildings in their place. If fact he did not realize there were mountains there till now. A nice scene but nothing is left just rubble.
… Within, Dug totally gives up. He is seen standing with head almost bent to ground. Clothes torn and mired in slop, for it had rain last night and much mud and ashes were about. He stood there silent for many hours, as if someone had unplugged his electricity to make him go. At his wits end he was stunned for many hours. Then it started to rain again. He had to find his horse for it ate the grass first put upon and had gone on grazing behind him. He turned away from city to see his horse in the distance, and as he went to catch up with horse … slowly he was coming out of his silence. But Dug was in great alarm of Mary and mom. He spend much much time trying to find them in the rubble. He went through much torcher to find Mary but he could not find her. He did find mother and he also found the owner of Mary’s town Glen.
… Mother Lucile called to him. They met and Lucile talked quietly, you stay with me. We will find my daughter. She cannot be far from here. She would have hidden somewhere. Dug just smiled but in his mind he knew She was comforting him more than anything. He did appreciate that thought. But problem was King Damian could not do much more to help, for by now, had run out of troops. Mother Lucile staying with Dug as much as she could. She was concerned for him.
(Dug, another army is on the horizon. Your Army.)

—-

… It was few hours later they heard great news. Turned out Mary was in town helping to clean up barn with others when bridge people came to war. A guard whisked Mary off with a few others who were in that barn and they found a safe haven away from harm.
… Once Dug was back and found Mary safe and sound, that all disappeared and he was quite content just to sit beside her, sharing all the every days stuff. Mary certainly did enjoy his company at this point. Many felt very secure with Dug before all this war happened. So now she felt this even more and did not wish to leave his side. Others close to the two knew and saw what was happening and prepared themselves to accept a new family member, very soon.
… But in a few hours Dug got a call. It was William telling of King Damian accepting a phone call from a guy who has a big army. He is sending 150 troops out in 2 days. Dug and William had a wonderful conversation and all seemed right with the world.
… Well the time did fly by very quickly. But this early morn Dug got a call saying the 150 troops from the fellow were on their way. Be ready, said William. ‘OK I am up thanks.’ Dug was told these troops would come in from the north. So he eventually went there near caves.

Chapter Eight.

… Eventually an army of 150 troops. Mr. Dale Valicko and Army of Sheldale. But what many did not know, Brent Saldana had also got another 150 troops out into area. Most heard of them coming into area on opposite side of bridge tunnels. in that way they can give a surprise attack or more like a surrounding of bridge people so to gather them up.
… Well as troops went into area quietly they met up with the 2 lads and Dug who arrived shortly before. They discussed which would be the better way to dislodge these bridge people from their tunnels here. Dug left the doings to the 2 lads whom said, they are going to let the river back into mountain so do not go there. We can get in the secret way and reach the machinery to fix river. They have preset up, so just take your troops down near river but watch out for any rumbling noise. Get into the hills as soon as you can. But stake out the hills before you even go the river area. Oh Why?.. Oh you will know soon enough. The river will become empty, as our troops have been out scouting the water ways clearing the low lands. The river will disappear within hours. then is the time to war against all. we will see. but as soon as you hear the roar, run up those hills for your life. But quietly. the others left there will drowned.

… Well when that time came our troops could not let these others just drowned. Gary had friends in this group. He was first to grab and help the men drowning. taking his gun and reaching it out over waters. then trying his hardest to drag them in. They did save some while others floated onto the more shallow land. The ones who were saved turned out to be a blessing. Later they did stay to help all else. More troops for our groups.

Travelling with the Roundup.
… Meanwhile, after the river was released and many died, our troops marched into bridge area and conquered there as well. They gathered all Bridge troops out of area. placing them with ropes, with many of their own troops so took over bridge area. They kept main leaders together and interrogated them as to whom they worked for. This all took place in the open area before bridge area. Top people said, ‘You gave these groups the right to come here without permission and kill the innocent persons. This was all conducted as these other groups here, were instructed to come here and open up these lands for a peaceful community. Well, What do you have to say for yourself?’

… Clarence uttered, ‘Well i have a higher boss. He has a group of people trying to find areas to partake in. It is tough in there areas Sir. But No, killing people is not the way to go. But i was following orders Sir. Dale asked, ‘Who is your boss, is he among the people here?’ ‘Oh no’ said Clearance. ‘He is in the city of Sheldale.’ ‘Yes go on, uttered top people. ‘Well, Clarence paused and thought, maybe if i am good i can get out of my predicament. So Clarence carried on chatting, ‘Well our top boss is called Brent.’
Dug’s ears perked up as he was quietly having a bit to eat.

‘Ok asked Dale Valicko, ‘Where is this your boss.’ ‘Oh, the 4 of them are in Sheldale and one is sitting in on King Damian’s group.’ ‘He is what!’ shouted Dale. ‘Sir’ spoke Clarence, ‘He is one of King Damian’s subjects and sits in on meetings they have. So he knows what Damian is planning. That is why we could get on with building so fast. Brent got wood and other materials from steeling them. He would hear when a shipment was coming and would take part. A piece here and a piece there. It was good till you caught up with us. Sorry sir, but I have little to do with it. I have to follow orders sir.’ Dale paused a minute then said, ‘I See. but you did not have to follow through, with the shooting of people who came along near your building sight.’ Clarence put his head down. Then solemnly said, ‘Well, in the moment, you are not sure what to do. Sometimes you just pass it off and say, yes, just to get them off your back, Sir. A boss is a boss. Sir…’

… Dale Valicko turned away to face his top people. A couple of teammates and 4 top guards of his. Now Brent Saldana was sent to King Damian for Brent had a big change of heart. Remember when Dug attacked him. Brent already being under much pressure, well he did not like what was happening. He asked his highs for a change. So When King Damian asked Dale, the head of army, to send 150 troops, They also sent Brent Saldana to King Damian with another 150 troops. So the two friends worked together to set this all up.
… Now Brent did not travel the miles with them. He had sent some top men along to help. Brent is a good organizer. So Dale and others, they said a few words then everyone was silent. Dug was doing some serious thinking as he sat on ground outside the inner circle of troops and prisoners. He thought, I am in the wrong profession. I have to find myself a decent job. This is not what my Mary would have me do. Maybe I will settle here, somewhere.
… Then suddenly Dale called attention to all. We will be taking you back to King Damian’s city so to meet up with your so called Boss Brent Saldana. Right away they started to march. The outer group lounging on the grounds had to act quickly when lower troops came and shouted commands to stand and walk. These ones on outskirts were not immediate threat so were aloud to lounge. So as all were starting their journey, There were about 45 People in all including troops guards and common persons. There was no warning, so all marched for 3 days to get to Sheldale.
… There was water along the way and a bit of rations but that was not the main focus. As they went the top people heard each ones story and got their particulars. So when they got to Sheldale into King Damian’s courtyard they were told to sit and relax. Dug was one of these people but he was very used to winging it, especially with no food. So he was not in bad shape once they got into that large courtyard.
… This land had an abundance of animals. As sitting along the fencing, on edges of courtyard, it was cute for the lambs came up to wire fencing and were putting their muzzle against Dugs back, along with a few others. They had to pet these cute creatures. The wool of the young were soft and they enjoyed the meetings as much as the troops did. As they were giving out rations of better quality, some gave bits to the animals who had their faces up against them. These animals wanted attention is all. It was very nice for a lot of the men.

Dug Facing the Truth.
… Shortly after that King Damian came out with others. He talked to them, but not blaming anyone in particular. He ushed 2 guards to bring something out to him. Well who should be coming out but Brent, said to be the High Boss of Bridge Group. Well, Dug took one look at him and fell into a faint. The other prisoners by fencing caught him as he fell. All eyes were there including Brent’s. Now Brent sure did not expect to see this person again. Brent was not sure if even his son, even after first confrontation many months ago. ‘Was Dug his son?’ Dug was a young child and younger brother was just an infant.

… Dug came to in a minute, and looked at Brent who was trying to hide. Brent did not truly know who this was. Dug got up in a rage and ran towards Brent, for this second time. In Dugs mind, was it a dream or had I done this before? The guards and Dale let things happen, not knowing exactly what the problem was. Dug got to his dad and was punching him and shoved him to ground. As Brent was on ground, Dug screamed, do you know how many people you killed. Do you know how many people who are in anguish. .. Why? .. Why? You are my dad??? Well you are not fit to be my dad. Brent Saldana! I legally disown you. I do not ever want to see you again. Dug went right up to Brent as he stood timidly watching. Then suddenly Dug slapped him across the face. With all this confrontation, Brent knew this must be his child. What confused Dug was Brent did not fight back. The guards now had his arms as support as they had helped him up, but it was like dad took his punishment, for he deserved it.

… Brent answered quietly, ‘Sir, I gave my army away for I did not wish to kill people. But in this life that is the only way we can keep our lives in order. When people are at your door wanting to beat it down so to takeover your living area, what are you to do. You have to fight for what is right. That is life. I got out of my past life because I was so shattered of ordering troops to help me kill the enemy. So I gave my army to another and I now overlook situations. I do not do the killing.
… ‘How in the world did you ever find me, sir. Does mother know where I am?’ Dug said, a civil ‘No.’ Brent said, ‘Sir, I am sorry for killing people but that is what I am trained for. I now do not do the killing. Sorry. That is why I am here and not on the front line. Now I only overlook situations.’
… With that, Dug quietly turned and disappeared into the crowd of prisoners.

Ending….

… Now, with the tunnel not guarded by others, to their surprise, they found the mine and all its riches. Later, with all the gems and riches there, troops phoned home to a wounded country with wonderful news. What a party for all involved.
Dargan’s were able to tell their boss he was rich, for he was one of the people in the endeavor of trying to open up that land.
… All the individuals who ventured to this area and took over a part of area, now have teamed up and help as a unit to prosper all areas including bridge area. There was enough land there for all to have and patrol a good chunk of the land. All knew their borders but for now they only wish to help the cause. They all know by recent experience, that to divide and conquer may mean a slow and painful takeover in future. So they stuck together in thick and thin and they all contributed their share to the pot. And with this in plan, the place thrives as a whole and nobody ever looked back, or for too long anyway.

… Dug too was in more jovial state and did visit mother but did not say a word of Dad. He was still mad at Dad, but he knew he had in fact talked to his dad. Dug asked Mom about the monthly money again for hoped that dad did not stop that. ‘This will be money from his pocket.’ Mother said ‘Yes, it is set up so I get that for life. Do not worry of me or your brother.’
… Then Dug thought, Maybe alimony moneys, for dad did leave mother. But as time went on, Dug thought long on what his dad said. This time he knew he did confront his father. Dugs young childhood thoughts were becoming altered. After seeing all the conniving plans in his later years by the very people he tried to befriend and help in last while, he too was easing his stance on life. He was seeing Dad’s point of view, for Dug knew some of the things he was told to do along with the rest of his troop. Even to the point of getting the people to fight on river bed so head of camp, could send river back and kill them. That was not an act of war nor and act of revenge, really. It was by nature that it would take place. After all the people did not need to go to river floor to fight. It was totally their choice. So who’s fault of their death would that have been??? Dug was seeing different sides to the same scenario. So on thinking of Dad and his setup, Dug was kind of proud that dad gave up his precious army just because he did not want to be responsible for killing people.

… Secret, The bridge people are digging for gold and copper. Gold is all shades known, for the copper they feel is flavoring the gold. They will maintain their homes in area but that is about it. The dam and bridge they build will enable them to close off river so it flows into cave they are excavating. This will clear out a new vain about once a year.
… These People are smart for this is not the first time they have managed this feat. They know this will damage the environment about and especially the villages along the river. This will evoke lawyers and the likes by the people living along rivers. But the riches are far more important to the Bridge People. The river is shut off to travel the cave and then after a day, sent back to the original route. They have many personnel at top and when they finish a dig out and put river back, that company will leave and a new company will come to continue on. Thus the law cannot sue the company that did the damage.
… Dug’s dad Brent Saldana is the one who sends the new companies out. That is Dad Brent’s job, screening new people to take over the tunnels when time. Thus the New company which has recently been gathered up, knows nothing about what happened. They are new here in this small village. The new companies often see the damage the river had created and are told that the people before did not manage the damn properly. Main office warns them to care for the damn at all times.
… The company wants the river to damage some areas, for then people are busy blaming them for river disruption, not tunnel digging and gem gathering. That is the Bridge Peoples secret. So it is a very planned coverup procedure.

King Damian’s Castle.
… So when all had settled the top people of King Damian and William, including Dugs Dad and Dads friend Dale Valicko sent out many invitations to collect the key person in this whole endeavor. William and Jeff bundles up and made that long trip to King Damian’s castle where these ceremonies would transpire. Not many people know what was going on. But after a great era often involving wars, the people were gathered together in celebrations. Now Dug had bucked at this for he was wishing to Marry his favorite persons soon. But that was a sideline. Dug. You see, what turned the tied in this whole story was not only Val’s army of 150 men which had been Dugs Dads army, but also it was Dugs dad Brent Saldana who mustered up courage and helped to lead those 300 men to bridge area as to corral all persons there to take them back to trial, through King Damian’s castle. With two top people in charge it did not take long for them to have all under control. Dug was still kind of clueless though, for Dug tends to set his mind and see things in a certain way.
… Now Dug’s mother, Dad did not expect to influence, but Dug’s Dad wished Dug to see and understand that he did what he did for the sake of all. For even as he was helping to lead 300 people into Bridge Group area with the help of his closest friend Dale Valicko, they both had decided there would be no killings, and there was not. So maybe you can have wars without killings? But just a putting into ones place. After all, if you cannot deal with the putting into ones place, that is not the problem of the masses but the problem of the one.

The Fight Within.
… Dug did not go back to Bridge area. He stayed with mom for a while. He had a lot going on in that young brain of his. The Tides were changing.
When he got the invitation to come to King Damian’s Castle, he was confused.
He did nothing of valor in that war.
If anything he argued with people to make them do what he thought should be done.
Sometimes it worked.
What! … Why was I invited?
It was too far away. I would have to leave mother for a week or more.
That is a long trip. No I am not going. Besides, to get a suit was expensive. … No way!

… As time went on Mom said a few things and suggested he go, but stay out of way. There will be ample food there. Then mom had a bright idea. Why do you not ask your friend Tanner to go with you. He can keep you company on the trip. Mom just wanted him to be happy and she could see he was not. Besides she was expecting company in a few nights and did not wish son to know. Testing the waters. Dug went to bed that night and thought. Well he realized he was lonesome for the excitement of the chase as it were. It would be nice to talk to William again, and even Damian. Maybe I will go. I have Williams number here. I will phone him tomorrow and ask if to bring a friend. Then I will decide.
… In morning Dug did phone William. Mother Jenn was pleased. She heard Dug answer phone and talked quietly, so she went out on back step, for the sun was shining beautifully and warming the bones. After about 10 minutes son came into kitchen and announced, ‘I will go. William said, I can bring a friend. Thanks for telling me that mom. I just want to say hello but not to get trapped in working there. War is over and i do not wish to re enter that phase. ever…’
… Mother turned and smiled. She said, ‘I know what you mean. It is not a good profession to enter into just because. You will get a good job I can see that. You need to meet your wife to be and get that part of life finished up too.’ ‘Yes mom. At the right time. i am just burnt out of that era.’ ‘OK Dear, at least write her. She may turn to someone else if wait too long.’ ‘Oh, I do not think so. Really? Well i should write her. I said I would. I do not know. … All too much! … A Fear of past?
I was in danger many times there and did not even know it. … It did not phase me. How come?’

Mom replied, ‘Well maybe too young. … Mind not acknowledging surroundings. or maybe even just shock of your situation.’ ‘Yes’ agreed Dug. ‘I am going out for a sweet drink. That will put a change in me. Maybe then i can think better. Thanks mom. See you in a few. Would you like something?’ ‘No son That is fine. It is almost dinner time.’ Dug grabbed his jacket with wallet in and almost raced out front door. He felt a release of that jailed feeling. A freedom came over him. Not sure what happened but so be it. Last Seen almost jogging down the street in the bright sunlight.
… Later that evening he compiled a letter for his dear Mary. The thought went through his mind of writing to dad as well. ‘What the heck?’ He passed that off quickly. He wrote many many letters almost every day, to his sweet wife to be. He told her of the big meeting and he has decided to attend. He wants to see her too. He was trying to set up time limits. Not sure if will work. I will try.
… As time went on Dug did write letters to Dad. He did not get a response the first two letters but Dad did answer the third. It was more a case of mother and how she was. Dug wished to make a path for dad to heal mom, but it did not transpire within this time element. It will happen soon, considering there will be a wedding on the horizon.

—-

… Well that was in Dugs mind. Outside Dugs mind is very different. Dad got ahold of mom via letter. It was only a few words because he knows she thinks he is dead. It was touch and go but after Dad Brent, told of son being in love, Mother wished to meet him. This is the secret rendezvous that will happen coming up one evening. Not sure when but door is open. Dad leaves it totally to mother. ‘We will meet for coffee. Nothing more.’ They have the place planned and are just waiting the right timing. No point in confusing the sons if it will not work.
… Plans are,
Brent will come home with Dug to surprise mom and Dug to hell. Hahaha. That is when nearing the time they start preparing for that Wedding Party. Dad feels a responsibility in raising his son. He knows his son has guts by the way he attacked dad twice now, but dad is not thinking of attacks. He is thinking of how he should look up to his son more. What a tenacious young man, to go to war for the saving of lives. His son is better than he is.

… Brent is a changed man. He is wishing to retire from army. He went from owning his own army, proud and strong, to feeling guilty of killings and giving his prize army to another. And now he looks back on all that happened and like his son, is getting chilled by the aspects.
… Closer to the time of the trip, William will phone and offer a ride to Dug. It was still 4 weeks away but that give ample time to analyze all that transpired back then.
Later, William also commented that another persons (Brent)will be riding with us, so you kids can be in the back and we adults will ride in the front. Is that good to you?’ ‘Sure’ said Dug, who was getting more excited as time came closer. ‘It will be good to see old friends.’
… So when day came, Dug had invited Tanner over to spend the night at Mother’s place. They had a good evening with good treats as playing cards and games. Mother Jenn’s younger son played a few games as well. Earlier in morning car blew horn out front. ‘Hurry’ called Mother. ‘Here is your knapsack, yours and yours. Good luck and have fun today. All will be good.’
… As the two kids rushed out front door, mother tagged along. But as Dug got to car he saw someone he was unsure of seeing. It was Brent his Dad. They saw eye to eye and Dug bowed his head and got into back of car. But what he did not know was mother Jenn was right behind him. When Dug realized this he was in alarm. Mom had no idea dad was still alive, (or that is what Dug thought.) Mother came right up to car and kissed Dad on the lips. Dug let out a squeal of ‘How?’ Mother turned to him in back and smiled saying, ‘All is OK.’ Dad Brent said to mother, ‘Have a good day and we will try be home before midnight. And there were smiles all around.
… As the car took off William said, ‘Well, life is full of surprises, hey Dug?’ Dug sat in back and uttered a quiet Yea. As Tanner patted him on shoulder. Dugs Dad said, Well we have to finish raising our oldest child. With wedding in air, it is our turn to arrange things. Dug welled up with tears saying quietly, ‘Yes, thanks.’ A comment in almost disbelief, but an event coming his way very soon.

… Our two lads in back were pretty quiet and whispered a few things as time went on. From Dugs homeland Sheldale where Dug grew up, they took a short cut off to the west so to bypass the smaller cities of Cleamont which was rubble now, but they also bypassed Belfort. This made the trip shorter and more a wilderness trip. Our boys often snoozed through this time.
… After a few hours they started getting into city again and with horns blowing the young lads were awake in back. But no sooner did they get into city than they took a main road out of city into plusher area. On a hill in distance they could see this castle of red and white bricks. They were all in anticipation of a good rest and a good meal.
… Along the way, Dug told them all that he would not be front and center for he did not wish to be involved with any war. I have retired from war permanently.
William and Brent from front seat, assured Dug it was awards night only. But Dug did not believe anyone at this point.
… Well the road became smaller and more winding up into tall trees. Then as building peeked through the trees you could see the beautiful red and white patterns, and it was close. The three spirals had small flags on them of their country, and Once in a while you could see the black iron fencing surrounding the grounds which were immense. Road went parallel along this fence sometimes and the gardens under those huge trees were lit up with the sunlight shining in. Beautiful.
… Dug thought, Mary would love to have those flowers for flower festival. Then Dug was not sure if King Damian was of that belief, but he sure has the flowers for it. Dugs mind was not totally there, he has so many things on his mind and the most pressing ones were taking up all his memory. Poor Dug. But Dad Brent knew what he needed and they would see to that when they got to castle.
… As they went they caught up to another car. They were playing follow the leader the last mile or so. Then road stopped at a turn about. There was another car there which was letting out people and then started to go around and down again. When Dug’s car let out the people they were ushed into another door of the castle. It was an area where we could put our coats and things before we entered another room. This new room had a table of finger foods but just before that were toilets. Most went there just to wash hands.
… As all ended up in this snack room others came also. But it turned out not to be a closed room. it was just a separate area so all were not crowding to get to table of goodies. After a few tiny sandwiches out came some drinks. Brent ordered a drink for himself and also for the two lads. Dug turned to Brent and said, This has wine in it. Sure said Brent. Good for you, it will settle your nerves. Dug smiled and gestured OK, then quickly asked Tanner if his was the same. Yes it was.
… These boys were not in a situation where wine or liquors were available. Tanner’s family being so pour till recently and Dug being lost and trying to find life, had no time for this. It was just not in their paths till now, so why not. Besides, Brent did not wish his son to go to his wedding and say, I never had wine before. That would not do. A wedding always has wine for toasts etc. Dad Was looking out for son in many ways. He has stepped up to plate and will help in anyway he can.
… Well the party went on and they did eat a wonderful meal. There were so many options but they had second rounds, and with portions small, all could try new things. There were many windows and the gardens were wonderful. Golden statues in many places and the odd bush pruned to be a monster of some type. Hahaha. All very interesting to our lads. There were a few laughs as they gawked out those windows into the green wilderness with Frankenstein looming above them, Haha. And Miss Muffet’s spider had real green gems in its legs. Super. All an interesting back drop as they had been taken out of dining area into a more relaxed zone, with many goodies for that last snack before awards night. By now all were so stuffed, but a small sugary delight was enough to tantalize one’s digestive system to spend that extra minute or so to digest the last morsel.

… Well the time came sooner than all thought, doesn’t it do that for everybody. They had several meetings with all involved and Dug discussed with Mary, in having a small wedding in a church near where Mary lived. He also wished the reception in her backyard. That was the start and the time he will never forget, when that bear made him meet the light of his life. In their wedding reception all will plant some flower seeds within the garden of life and Dug with Mary will tend that garden for as many years as Mother Lucile will have them. Then they will get a new garden of their own.
